Betty Armstrong's Role In The General Education Classroom
Jake is a third grader who suffers from a learning disability. His behaviors are similar to students who have been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD). Although, Jake has not been labeled as having ADHD. He is performing exceptionally well in academics when he is in his general education classroom for 2 hours a day with his peers. Betty Armstrong is Jake’s general education teacher who is well organized and follows the daily schedule precisely. His teacher has said often how her goal is to make children feel safe in her classroom. She has always been a teacher of acceptance when it came to students with disabilities being in her classroom. Betty will need to monitor and evaluate the progress of every child and maintain communication with the child and their parents. She will need to meet with Mrs. Moss on a regular basis in case modifications are needed. They will need to work collaboratively together to develop a schedule for the support person who will help Jake (Specific Roles of General Educators, 2013). Students with disabilities in a general education classroom are expected to participate alongside general education peers. Betty’s curriculum does not have to change much in order to provide services for Jake.Betty, along with Jake’s parents and his special education teacher needs to meet and be involved in this decision (NEA, …show more content…
Sharon Moss will need to meet with Mrs. Armstrong to find out what Mrs. Armstrong’s expectations for Jake are and to come up with a plan. Once this is determined, then both teachers will need to narrow the expectations to 2 or 3 which Jake will work on. A sticker chart can be used in order to show his progress. For instance, if Mrs. Armstrong wants him to keep his school work for the day organized and placed in the appropriate place, Jake will receive a sticker for following directions. When the teachers feel he has mastered the 2 or 3 expectations, they can add a couple more. Once Jake has started to master these expectations, Betty will feel more comfortable having him join her class. He will join her class slowly to ensure Jake feels safe in her classroom (A. Leddy, personal communication, February 6, 2018). Another great tool for Jake to utilize would be a “study buddy”. This is a classmate who Jake feels comfortable with and can ask for help when needed (A. Sylvester, personal communication, February 6, 2017). For two weeks, Jake will begin to stay in Mrs. Armstrong’s classroom for 3 hours a day. In this third hour, once a day for each day of the week, Jake will attend special which is art, music, guidance, physical education, and library with his general education classroom.     Tommy Martin is finding it hard to interact with other children and his educators at school. He is in grade 4 now and has had this problem since kindergarten. He lacks interest in the classroom and he is difficult to work with. Often times he is sent to the principal’s office because of inappropriate behavior.     I selected my student from one of my students that I viewed to have some of the worst behavior in the class. I am at Bond Elementary School which is an intercity school. Most of the school’s student population comes from subsidized housing (the projects). I am in a first grade class of nineteen students. While performing my duties at in Mrs. J Williams Classroom I became very eager to observe as well as work with a student by the name of Ja’Von W. Ja’Von is a six year old, I recently found out that his mother is on drugs and is being supported by his sixteen year old brother. Many of the students that I have observed in the classroom have had behavior problems and issues with their academics especially reading, but Ja’Von seemed to stick out more than the other students did. While the other students would be engaging in reading activities, Ja’Von would constantly disrupt other students that were engaged in their reading lessons. He also seemed to have issues with their cooperating teacher Mrs. J. Williams. During a conversation with Mrs. J. Williams she noted that this was a frequent and on going thing with this particular student. When I decided to work with Ja’Von, one of the first activities that I wanted to engage in was her reading aloud to me. It dawned on me that the student’s behavior problem was his difficulty to read. Ja’Von was missing the basic skills that she needed in order to read with fluency as well as read with understanding. I felt that this would be a great opportunity for me to help him with his reading but it will also make for a good behavior change project.…

    Bobby, a young boy, is diagnosed with autism at age 3. At age 5 his parents attempt to place him into the kindergarten class in their school district. The school district wanted to immediately put Bobby into a special education classroom that is made up of entirely special needs children of all different disorders. Knowing that Bobby was prone to tantrums and uneasy with things unfamiliar to him, his parents wanted Bobby placed into a regular classroom with normally functioning students but with extra help from perhaps an extra aide or teacher.     Johnathan has a disability known as Autism, which hinders his everyday learning. Autism is identified as a complex developmental disability. Professionals believe that Autism presents itself during the first three years of a person's life. This condition is the consequence of a neurological disorder that has an effect on a brain’s normal function, affecting the development of the person's communication and social interaction skills. Autism places a daily struggle on Johnathan’s education and his strengths and weaknesses are very apparent. A major weakness for Johnathan is his disinterest in social interaction. When placed in a group setting, he will not interact with his peers. For instance, during Physical Education class; he will stand along the side and will only join the group when his PCA encourages him to do so. His communication skills fail him in other key areas as well. Due to his Autism, Johnathan needs extensive time to process theories and to express his thoughts and responses. At times, it will take him up to a minute to process the information and form an appropriate response. A person with autism may often miss a cue that their teacher presents, which would cause a battle within the classroom setting. A student with Autism like Johnathan might not know that somebody is trying to talk to them. They may also be very interested in talking to a particular person or group of people, but do not have the same skills as others to become fully involved and this will cause frustration. Johnathan simply lacks the necessary playing and talking skills. This causes a major issue within the classroom, because he is consistently playing catch up. Another weakness that Johnathan displays is his need to do things in multiples of 3. Luckily, his classmates have adapted to this requirement and they accommodate him when needed.
