In Case Study #2, my student, Jessica, is a 15 year old female with an intellectual disability. She attends a high school where she is enrolled in the Special Education program. As of late, Jessica is demonstrating inappropriate behaviors towards her peers and teachers. In addition, Jessica parents seems to be very protective of her and does not require her to assist around the home. Because of that, Jessica is completely reliant on her parents for her basic skills needs such as ironing, cleaning and cooking, and using public transportation. On the other hand, Jessica parents are certain she will attend a university one day, yet their unsure how to assist her with this transition. This case study is about David (name change to protect the student), a ninth grade student classified autism spectrum disorder and anxiety disorder. David is enrolled in inclusion classes for his academic subjects. David has had difficulty making the transition to high school. He is failing his classes and his parents and teachers report that his poor organizational skills decrease his ability to complete work independently and on time. Based on the results of the IRI, Soloba, who is a 9-year-old student, in a fourth grade general education class. She is a well-behaved student always looking to do the right thing, but is easily distracted. Soloba has a hard time in most subject areas and is below grade level in both math and reading. She is currently attends an after school math program twice a week and also pushes in with the special education teacher who works on language arts skills once a week. Soloba’s non-verbal behavior includes avoiding eye contact when struggling with classwork or “getting in trouble”. Participants in Viviana and I’s research included 144 East High students. These student ranged from 9th-11th grade but could be broken up into 18 freshmen, 33 sophomores, 69 juniors, and 24 seniors. English is the primary language spoken at home where she lives with her mother, father, and two sisters age fifteen and seventeen. Also her older brother is usually home from college for weekends. Bailey’s siblings are bright, ambitious, and identified as academically gifted with differentiated education plans.
