The book is about how surveillance was used in the past and gives insight as to how it would be used in modern days. The story takes place in an imaginary place called Oceania, and in the novel 1984, the main character, Winston and the other citizens of Oceania didn't have a right to speak out of their opinions, or be intelligent. “Big Brother” was constantly watching their every move through telescreens and helicopters. The citizens never had had the freedom to speak their mind they were always forced to believe what Big Brother told them.
