Big Daddy Movie Analysis
The movie Big Daddy would be a great movie to choose to watch when observing parenting. This movie demonstrates how someone, who has no idea of what it is like to have children, plays the role of a parent. It all started when a person from child services dropped Julian of at Sonny’s apartment. He agrees to take care of the little boy and adopt him because he believes that his girlfriend, Vanessa, will have a pronatalism attitude about this adoption and that will help prove to his girlfriend that he can be a mature adult. Having a pronatalism attitude about Sonny adopting the kid would be that she is very excited and positive about this adoption, but it turns out Sonny was wrong and she was not at all interested. Although not all of these roles demonstrated good parenting, Sonny’s parenting increased as the movie progressed on. He displayed the caregiver-parenting role when he decided to take Julian in when the man from child services first brought him. A caregiver role that could have been improved was when Julian messed up his pants in his bed one night. Instead of just putting newspapers on it he could have showed him that he needed to put them in the washer and then put a clean pair of sheets on the bed. The emotional parenting role was also demonstrated a lot throughout this movie. It was first demonstrated when Julian was fixing his cereal and knocked the milk on the floor, which called Sonny to yell. Sonny’s yelling caused Julian to get upset and cry and he did not stop crying until Sonny tripped over his toy and that made him laugh. The teaching-parenting role was also demonstrated in negative and positive ways throughout this move. When Sonny allowed Julian to use the restroom on the side of a restaurant negative teaching was demonstrated, because Sonny was not teaching Julian good manners. Teaching that influenced good behavior was demonstrated when Sonny taught Julian how to help skaters out instead of tripping them when they skated by. He did this by allowing Julian to hold up signs that warned the skaters they needed to slow down. Child services eventually took Julian away from
