9 major biomes in the terrestrial biomes 1. Tundra – also called arctic tundra occurs in extreme northern latitudes wherever snow melts seasonally. 2. Taiga – Is the evergreen forest of the north. Taiga or boreal forest is the largest biome in the world. 3. Temperate Rain Forest – this biome has a cool weather, dense fog, and high precipitation. Coniferous temperate rainforest grows on the northwest coast of North America. 4. Temperate Deciduous Forest – seasonality that is hot summer and cold winters are characteristic of temperate deciduous forest. They occur in temperate areas where precipitation ranges from about 75 to 126 cm annually. 5. Temperate Grassland – the hot summer, cold winters, fire helps share the landscape and rainfall is often uncertain in temperate grassland. Annual precipitation averages 25 to 75 cm. 6. Chaparral – Is a thicket of evergreen shrubs and small trees. 7. Desert – are dry areas found in temperate region (cold desert) and in subtropical or tropical regions (warm desert) North America has four distinct desert. * Basin desert in Nevada, Utah * Mojave desert in Nevada and California * Chihuahuan desert in Texas and New Mexico * Sonoran desert in Arizona, California and Mexico. 8. Savanna --is a tropical grassland with scattered clumps of trees. Savanna is found in areas of relatively low or seasonal rainfall with prolonged dry periods. 9. Tropical Forest – occur in regions subjected to a wet season and a dry season (usually two to three months each year.)
Aquatic ecosystem – are classified primarily on abiotic factors, such as salinity that help determine an aquatic life
