The Black Deaf Community seems silly to believe the existence of itself, but in reality based on surveys and observations, it seems rather smart. Going through the supplemental reading, I have noticed the Black Deaf community consists of strong and proud members of both, overcoming many issues thrown at them. This paper will discuss the issues and show how amazing the community really is.
To be a part of two different cultures at the same time seems almost impossible. A wise man once said, “you cannot serve two masters, you either hate the one and love the other or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other”. Now those wise words weren’t talking about cultures and communities, but rather God or money, but it still applies. Say an Irish Mexican grew up in America and became confused as to what culture to follow. People often believe there is no such thing as the best of both worlds, but there is indeed. The Black Deaf culture/community is proof of this two steps in each world. The Black Deaf are a group of individuals that appear to be immersed in both the black and the deaf culture. Although you cannot physically be in two places at once, or in two cultures at once, to be immersed in both is a possibility. For this truth to be clear, understanding the issues and struggles to accomplish the best of both worlds is a must. The black deaf members have to deal with three main issues, the reality of a Black Deaf community, their identity, and communication within and out of the community itself. The Black deaf community share characteristics and values from both the Black community as well as the Deaf community; although you have to remember that the Black Deaf community has their own unique characteristics as well: social interaction, education, and the use of sign
