Black September: Palestinian Leader Abu-Iyad
The feeling of peace was abruptly halted just after 4 AM the morning of September 5, 1972. Palestinian terrorists known as “Black September” raided apartment five, a ground-floor apartment housing Israeli athletes located at thirty-one Connollystrasse, taking nine athletes hostage. In an effort to help protect their fellow athletes, two other members of the Israeli weightlifting team were killed in the struggle.
Black September leader Abu-Iyad had one demand during hostage negotiators shortly after the attack. He promised a release of the hostages only after about 236 Palestinian prisoners were released on Israeli soil. If the demands of Black September were not met, he threatened to kill one Israeli hostage every hour on the hour.

Black September had threatened to kill the Israeli athletes and coaches if their demands weren’t fulfilled. Black September gave the government a certain time to release the 200 Palestinians inmates. As time passed, the Palestinians still weren’t released. I can imagine the eleven athletes and coaches being very afraid at that moment. They probably thought they were going to lose their life. At that point, the athletes and coaches had a legitimate reason to give in to demands by Black September. It would have been reasonable for the athletes to and coaches to give in to their demands to live.…
