Blizzards: A Short Story
Blizzards roar like vicious troops hungry for battle. The gale-force wind screeches like a crow. Before long, the angry, unrelenting waves crash into the frozen coast as loud as a mountain tumbling to the ground. Lightning flashes across the sky causing a sound similar to an old, sturdy chestnut tree being ripped. An avalanche of hailstones clatters down from the sky like marbles spilt from a box. Deafening whips of ice skid across the frozen floor and eliminate any small careless creatures. Tornados howl like a war-like pack of starving wolves.

The overall structure and plot of the story plays a part in how Wolff viewed his own life within the characters. It opens with a simple yet intriguing statement: "Tub had been waiting for an hour in the falling snow" (Wolff 1). Immediately, this hook does its job drawing the reader into the story and making him wonder what is going on. In the same paragraph we find that Tub is walking down the street, carrying a rifle and seemingly, shooting the breeze. But then a car comes from nowhere, nearly killing Tub and forcing him to leap off the roadside. Inside the truck, Tub's friends, Kenny and Frank, wait laughing at the apparent "joke" that they had just played. Tub doesn't seem quite as amused, stating, "You could've killed me!" (Wolff 5). Then, the three friends begin to make their way towards the woods to go hunting for…

It’s being outside past midnight on a winter night. It’s a secret - it’s something we’re not supposed to see. The sky is purple but it’s also white. And why is it so bright out? The streetlamps mix the colors into a dynamic palate, with a hint of bronze. And the snowflakes the snowflakes the snowflakes. They’re frozen. Yes they are literally frozen water but that’s not what I mean. It’s chaos but if you look closer it’s not chaos. Look up. Look closer - they’re suspended in thin air, but every time you exhale they start falling again. It’s hushed. It’s a secret. You’re not supposed to look. You’re supposed to wake up the next morning and look outside while you’re making coffee and think, “Huh. Maybe they’ll cancel classes today”.…

Black Blizzard is a dry tidal wave that would be 7,000 feet high and destroy everything. You and your parents would take wet towels are cram them into the bottoms of the doors and the bottoms of the windows to keep dust out. Your parents would also give you a wet towel to put over your face so you wouldn’t inhale the dust. Then you would sit in the middle of the room huddled with your family all together.…

The metaphor of the ship’s “music… howling” brings an auditory imagery which symbolizes the storm, which overwhelms the singular pronoun “him” just as the storm overwhelms the Star of the Sea. As well Nature overwhelms the Man. “The low whistling; the tortured rumbles; the wheezy sputters of breeze flowing through it” gives a sharp feeling with its short phrases, which gives the sentence certain rhythm. The repetition of similar vowels (“whistling”, “wheezy”, “breeze”) creates a hollow sound that are similar to that of a gust of wind at sea.…

Due to this problem people forced to stay home for those days and their income decrease for that month. Noise. The dull roar that gave way to the cacophonous din that swirled within my ears. Or maybe more specifically, it was the lack of said noise that reigned around me and the profound silence that held me prisoner in my own body. All my thoughts were running wild causing what seemed like a discordant orchestra, each seeking to be recognized over my most prevalent fearful thought: “Somebody help!”…
