A big screen advertisement caught my eye the other day while taking my pet dog for a walk. The poster stated in big blue letters next to the image of a Labrador “Through expense and damage how can we put up with them?”(Dogs). Bored and tired after picking up poo after poo, this got me thinking, do the advantages of having a pet really outweigh the disadvantages? Later on that evening Olli was sick and poor mum, who was meant to be going to her sister’s wedding reception, had to take him to the vet. Ollie is a cute Maltese puppy who has a great personality and loves to have fun, but unfortunately i don’t always have fun when I’m picking up thousands of pieces of ripped up tissue paper from all over our lounge floor.

Pets have become a common sight in many households. In fact, one would be hard pressed to find a household without pets such as fish, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters and even turtles. However; although there are many pros of owning a pet, there are also many cons that young kids like you or I don’t always see when pleading our parents to purchase the cutest pets.

One of the great aspects of owning a pet is the unquestionable love and devotion that you will share with it. Companionship is a major pro to owning a living item, whether it is a snail, right the way up to a snake. This huge burden placed on your shoulders can often help to mature teens – it certainly affected me over the past 2 years – I can tell you that!

Literature on the American Civil War is very intriguing. The Civil War brought a highly desired end to slavery, but it also came with very undesired death and destruction. The Civil War changed how writers write forever. In the South pre-Civil War life revolved around agriculture, mostly on large farms or plantations where enslaved African Americans were forced to do most of the labor. In the North pre-Civil War, the soil and climate favored smaller farmsteads rather than large plantations, which didnt need slavery to operate them.…

I grew up on a farm and experienced the care and maintenance of many different kinds of animals. There were cows, pigs, horses, chickens, goats, and ducks, dogs, cats and probably some I don’t even remember. I do remember how much work it was to take care of these animals. I think this experience gives me a different perspective on animals than most people, I always think of how much work will be involved when acquiring a new pet. The rest of my family just thinks about the cuteness factor. Any animal can be cute, but some of them aren’t as difficult to manage as others. So I have two requirements now for a pet, the cuteness factor of course and low maintenance, I believe pets should be fun not hard work.…

I persisted for weeks, giving as many benefits to owning a pet as my little brain could come up with. I’d say that it would make me more responsible and it’d be like having a new friend. They finally agreed, saying that we could get one in a few weeks. Thinking back on it now, they most likely wanted to add a new member to the home too, they just didn't openly admit it. I remember those weeks of anticipation going by extremely slow. I filled most of my days with movies that featured talking dogs. When that morning came, my body was like a can, filled with elation and ready to explode. I was hopping up and down with animation, buzzed from the knowledge that I would soon have a pet of my own. A couple of hours later, I plopped into the backseat of my parents’ SUV and clicked my seat belt into its compartment. The car ride, unlike the three week long wait, went by quickly. We arrived to the pet store in no time and were soon browsing for our new family member.…
