Borderland Julia Sushytska Analysis
BORDERLAND - This term was used in our first class and it is the first word I wrote in my notebook. This key concept was particularly interesting and though-provoking. It helped me develop ideas about Eastern Europe from the start of Unit 1. It made me think about borderlands all over the world, not just in Eastern Europe. I started to wonder what exactly defines where a country ends, does it really end at the borderland?
Julia Sushytska explains in her article “what is Eastern Europe – a philosophical approach” how “borderlands are the territories in which several different cultures, ethnicities, religious communities, etc. exist side by side. In contrast to borders that are supposed to entail separation and the absence of contact between

People can be grouped automatically by their culture, age, class, beliefs and so on. Perhaps on a subconscious level, we were thinking people with the same worldview were able to get along with each other. Not only people from broader society, but also American college students have their groups often defined by language. Someone goes out with only fixed number of people, and rarely change all the time. Someone is even isolated by others because of his/her language ability. Is that because people are content with their status quo, and do not want to adapt new ideologies or environment? Or, people like to hold stereotype to others. No matter what factors, I want to conclude that in one word, which is boundaries. So, what role do boundaries play in people’s lives? To be more specific, how do…

The term of “contact zone” seems pretty simple to understand at the first look but what does it truly means? Mary Louise defines this term as “… social spaces where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical power” (Pratt 575). In a “contact zone” a person meets with two different cultures, going through a struggle to maintain a certain identity. As for me, I have faced this contact zone when I left my country to study abroad in United States. I have struggled to conform to two different cultures while trying to figure out my own true identity. I have only been here for half a year but I am still not comfortable with this new culture which differs a lot with the culture I grew up in.…

These two countries have a natural boundary that splits Eastern Europe from Asia. This boundary is the Ural Mountains. I think that having this physical boundary is a good thing. It allows people to actually see the separation between the two countries. The nations that are classified as either Eastern Europe or Asia have similarities to one another such as language, ethnical backgrounds and culture. There are many countries that are near one another but are not a part of the same nation. For instance, Poland is a part of Eastern Europe, while Belarus and Ukraine don’t share the same similarities as Europe and therefore are not considered a part of Eastern Europe. St. Petersburg and Moscow are a part of Russia but St. Petersburg would like to be a part of Europe. Moldova also joined the European Union. Latvia is a part of Northern Europe.…

Our concepts of geography have been shaped by western historians of the past, and in recent years some scholars have questioned very basic assumptions about the ways that the globe is divided. For example, take the concept of a continent. Why is Europe considered a continent? What actually separates Europe from Asia? Certainly, physical geographical separation of the two continents is far from clear. Historians Martin Lewis and Karen Wigen refer to cartographic ethnocentrism in their controversial book, The Myth of Continents. This ethnic point of view is centered around Europe, and a little later, around the United States. For example, where did the name "Middle East" come from? From the European perspective, this area is east of Europe, but it is not as far away as China is. If we look at the Middle East from a cultural point of view, we certainly can see commonalities that extend throughout northern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Europe, and Asia. So why do we divide the area up into several continents?…
