Bowling Alone Putman Summary
In, Bowling Alone, Putman poses a very important question, why is civil society declining in the past several decades? Putman starts off his question by viewing the works of Tocqueville when he visited America. While being in America in the 1830’s, he found that civic association, norms, and networks are what make up America’s society. Along with that, he thought that social capital benefitted our society. Putman then goes on to question why civil engagement decreased in our society. Our voter turnout, membership of church, and public or town meeting membership, fraternal organizations, and women organizations have decreased while individual bowling has increased. Although these specific organizations are dwindling down, organizations such as AARP, nonprofit organizations, and support groups are growing. Society now is also more focused on workplace-based social connections and less of neighborhood involvement. Our trust for each other has also decreased. Throughout this whole essay, Putman is making a correlation between social connectedness and civic engagement and is making a correlation between social …show more content…

In The National Honors Society and Student Council my role was to fundraise money for certain organizations and our community and to raise awareness for those certain causes, while in volleyball and cheer I was a member in these sports and competitively tried to beat other teams while encouraging my own. I have participated in my college community by being involved in Christian Business Leaders, Impact, and church. In Christian Business Leaders I help our Outreach program by finding activities and ways our organization can help people, and then by carrying them out. In Impact and Church, I am involved and surrounded by people who hold each other accountable to live Christian lives and to reach out to others and show God’s

Putnam claims that in the last several decades community groups have decreased in number and among the groups still in existence membership is low. Yet he also says that Americans now have more time on their hands. Could this be the effect of our world's rapidly changing technological abilities and is this new technology decreasing one's social capital?…

This article is still discussing the concerns about the decline, but 9/11 has really changed the citizens and convinced them to be more engaged in politics and increase social capital by trusting their government. My own view on this is that both of these articles have good points on either the improvement or the decline of civic engagement, but both of their results depend on certain factors such as trust, which can vary based on current events or past events that have an important impact on the citizens. When it comes to the topic of Social Capital, most of us can agree that the decline or improvement of it can depend on the trust of citizens and the networks built in the community from that trust. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of “Is civic engagement improving or declining more in the present day society of America?” Whereas some are convinced that civic engagement in the present…

Between 1980 and 1993 the total number of bowlers in America increased by 10 percent, while league bowling decreased by 40 percent. This statistic, that shows the rise of solo bowling threatens the very, livelihood of bowling business proprietors because many of those people who bowl as members of leagues consume three times as much beer and pizza. Common knowledge then comes into play, the profit money in bowling does not derive from the balls and shoes but rather the other expenditures such as, beer and pizza. The broader social significance, in this matter though, however lies in the social communication and conversations that can derive from beer and pizza, as compared to solo bowlers. Putnam offers other information that supports his claim,…

Hello, I’m Caroline Woodle and I feel that I would be a propitious member of National Honor Society. This organization does an incredible job of recognizing students who are leaders in their communities. In my opinion, the most influential part of a person is their character. Activities such as competitive dance, FFA, and youth leadership events continuously reinforce my values of honesty and hardwork. Giving to and inspiring others are two of the most important parts of my life. Numerous Midwest mission trips revealed to me the responsibility and desire I have to serve others. During these work trips, my youth group and I met with dozens of people who had devastating stories of natural disasters that had completely destroyed their homes and…

Ultimately character to me is represented through a person through great characteristics such as responsibility, good behavior, reliability and much more. I personally believe that I am a representation of character, as a fact responsibility is something that I find to be very important to me because people such as your teachers and peers will always count on you. As well as having responsibility being reliable to my peers is something that I care much about. Being reliable to others isn’t just helping others through judgement but helping that person with rational advice which represents how much you care for them. Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

All throughout school I have participated in many clubs and organizations that have not only molded me as a person, but have helped me to develop responsibility, and leadership skills. Currently I am an active member of National Honor Society, and DECA. Both of these organizations, provided by my high school, encourage leadership, volunteer work, and have high expectations for behavior, and grades. Being in National Honor Society has shown me to continually do for others in need. There are always opportunities to get involved with the community, and even create drives for things like stuffed animals, and blankets for children who are sick in the hospital, and “Care Catties” for cancer patients, which include tissues, water bottles, hard candy, and lotion. DECA is another organization I am involved in at Frenship High School. DECA is a business organization for high school marketing students looking to learn, develop and compete in a competitive event. I have been a member since my sophomore…
