Broadway: The Impact Of Feminism On Broadway
My topic is Feminism on Broadway. Theater has always been a big part of my life, I have made many of friends through theater. I think the biggest impact it has had on my life would probably be the confidence and strength it has given me. Especially when I see a strong women on stage playing a powerful women. That is why I chose this topic. I wanted to share my love of theater, but also show other girls the confidence that radiates from these powerful actresses/characters and they can be what they want and be as strong as the actresses can.
Some of my goals that I’ve had throughout my Senior Project were to enjoy my topic. I believe that enjoying what you are working on can improve of the overall quality of the work. Another goal I had was

The topic I did for my Senior Project was a continuation of an Honors project I did in Junior year for my American Vistas class. I enjoyed the topic so much that I knew automatically that this was the topic I wanted to do for my Senior Project. After that I started doing my research. Some of my sources included: Playbill.com, and the book Changed for Good: A Feminist History of the Broadway Musical by Stacy Wolf. These sources helped me gained how actress felt about playing the iconic and powerful role of Elphaba, and what it meant to them. The book also gave me a deeper analysis of the musical Wicked and the impact it has had on many young girls. My next steps were to figure out what my songs were that I would look deeper into. I had 4 songs that I knew from previous research that showed a powerful female performance. After some more research I was able to find a 5th song. This song when I first heard it, I thought it had nothing to do Feminism, I just thought it was a catchy song, but in reality So Much Better can be seen as a female empowerment song. You just need to listen to it many times to get a deeper meaning from it. After all my songs were collected, I needed to work on my applied piece. After some thought, I decided I wanted to teach a mini-lesson about Feminism on Broadway to the younger girls at IACS. I would have them listen to my songs and then we would have a “class discussion” about their reactions to the songs. I also had some quotes I wanted them to think about. My first idea was to teach the 8th, 9th, and 10th grade girls. After talking to Mrs.Kapeckas and Dr.Arnold for permission to email students, I felt pretty confident that I was going to get a lot of responses because I knew a lot of girls who liked theater. Boy, was I wrong! After weeks of waiting I had gotten one response, two if I was lucky. So, I decided to change my audience to high school girls and I had officially chosen a date. I put a

The performing arts allow one to become another person and indulge in different parts of his personality. On stage, actors can explore key themes and issues within humanity. However, some populations, such as women, feel that their emotional struggles and triumphs are often secondary or, worse yet, absent from the plot entirely. In numerous shows, the female leading role serves solely as the beautiful love interest, while the plot centers around the leading male’s conflicts. Genevieve Flati, a seasoned performer and writer with over 23 years of experience, decided to create the musical revue “(Wo)men Rule Broadway” with the help of musical director Kelly Rogers to portray these human experiences from a woman’s perspective. Flati says, “Our…

My goal has been to be prepared and sometimes ahead of what’s coming, even if it has meant giving up some free time on evenings and the weekends. I have and continue to work hard to achieve my goals and take pride in my accomplishments thus far. I am never happy with something that is anything than less than my best effort. Honestly, while I was getting the smart and focus two assignment done I imagined myself setting up different types of goals and not achieving any of them. The reason I predicted this was because usually when set an objective for myself it usually backfires as a result of me not being very motivated. Nevertheless, I gave these tasks a chance to hopefully learn new strategies for the future to manage my academic and, in the long run, my career. In addition while I usually fail at achieving my goal I hoped that this new strategy would help me create a more realistic goal.…

My final topic that I chose is The Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was the name given to the cultural, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem. In a phase of the Great Migration, half a million African Americans or so moved to the cities of the North. Most of them moved from the rural South in hopes of escaping poverty and oppression of Jim Crow Laws. White Landlords refused to rent to African-Americans, this led many newcomers to cluster in all-black neighborhoods. In the 1920's Harlem became the center of African-American Culture.…

Choosing a topic on the 19th amendment being created was natural for me. Discussing how thousands of women marched, petitioned, and risk their life just for my right to vote is mind-blowing to me. These women made history because they were so devoted to their cause and demanded that women be treated as equal as men. But if it wasn’t for people like them, Americans wouldn’t have any rights that we have today. By researching and learning on women’s suffrage, I believe that it will better inform me and you on the importance of women voting.…

The most important reason why Show Boat was a landmark on Broadway because the characters were realistic which portrayed the unhappy marriages, race relations, and miscegenation in that era (Brown.) Show Boat changed the audiences’ perceptions of what a musical theater would be compared to the superficial music comedies and heavy operettas that had previously dominated Broadway (Show Boat—the history.) Not only did Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II adapt Show Boat from the novel, but they also created music and poems to fit each of the character’s emotions. This made Show Boat was far more different and noteworthy than other musicals (Mroczka.) In Show Boat on Broadway in 1927, the producer was Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. and two original stars…

The topic I chose is “Why are college athletes not being paid for playing sports in college while others around them are?” College athletes are like other professional athletes only thing different is they are one level under professionals and they are not being paid. The athletes are not being paid for their entertainment, but they are doing just about everything a professional athlete is doing such as being on television, playing on holidays, and being exposed to the media. This topic was chosen because I want to address the similar things both professional athletes and college athletes have in common because at the end of the day if this situation was vice versa, then the media would be wondering why professionals are not being paid, but college players are. Both College Players and Professional players should be paid because they both have the same effect on the world.…

Musical theater and entertainment have been an ever-changing enterprise that, until very recently, included little diversity. In March of 2008, a new musical was presented on Broadway. It was titled In the Heights. This new musical featured something never before seen in musical theater: the songs are primarily latino rap. It was a bold step down a path no one had taken before. The story takes places in a poor neighborhood in New York called Washington Heights. Those living there are immigrants from hispanic and latino countries, such as Puerto Rico and The Dominican Republic. This new musical was written by composer, rapper, and actor Lin Manuel Miranda. Miranda starred as the main character, Usnavi. He composed all of the music, rap, and lyrics for the show. At a performance in the White House for president…
