The last of the four injunctions is the one that has stuck the most throughout Pollack’s publishing. The ‘No Sissy Stuff’ component of the Boy Code, is “the literal gender straitjacket” (William Pollock, 24) that says that in order to be masculine you cannot posses any fluffy feelings that could be seen as feminine.…

In “Bros before Hos: The Guy Code” by Michael Kimmel, he explains what “being a man” means exactly. Many men between the ages of 16 through 26 believe it means men don’t ask for directions, don’t cry or show feelings, men need to have an “everything will be okay” attitude, etc. Not much has changed over the past 30 years. Men act a certain way not because of females, but because they want to be accepted by other males. Men do not see women as equals; they see women as something to show off to other men, like something you own.…

In “Bros Before Hos”: The Guy Code, Michael Kimmel discusses the ways that today’s society expects guys (males between the ages of 16 and 26) to behave. He spends a lot of time on “Guy Code,” a list of values that all men are supposed to have that have been summarized by Robert Brannon, a social psychologist of the 1970s. The first rule is “No Sissy Stuff,” meaning that guys shouldn’t show their feelings, and if they do it is considered a sign of weakness. The second is “Be a Big Wheel,” an idea that masculinity is measured by wealth and power. The third, “Be a Sturdy Oak,” says that guys should be reliable in times of crisis. And the last, “Give ‘em Hell,” implies that men should always take risks and show aggression.…

no. Everywhere we go we hear people, males and females, refer to women as guys. For instance hey guys. I work at a bar as a server and it tends to get a bit crowded. So what if I were to try to get through a group of people, again men and women, and say excuse me ladies I need to get through. Even as polite as I was the men would look at me…

    Late-Maturing Boys

Societies beliefs and expectations about what behaviors are appropriate for males and females have a lot to do with their maturation stages. Boys are socialized toward achievement in the world of accomplishment. Physically mature boys appear to be more competent achievers and better able to meet society’s expectations for males. Late-maturing boys may appear useless in this affection, and this could be hostile to their self-esteem. Boys are also socially or culturally influenced to be like kids. For example, how men are always asked how many women have they been with or how many girlfriends have they had, unlike girls who are expected to be perfect and pure. Girls, on the other hand, have difficult early maturation because girls go through…

The phrase, “let the boys be boys.” before, is often repeated by parents regarding their sons. So what makes a boy, a boy? Bulging muscles? G.I. Joe like characteristics? Short hair? Wearing blue? Boys must learn what boys and men like, what they do, and even how they think and feel. Men are encouraged to act tough, strong, aggressive, and show no weakness. According to this…

In some perspectives this can be seen as true. Matter of fact, some women event take these “compliments” as a way to boost their self-esteem. For instance, in the blunt article written by Paris Lees for Vice, titled I Love Wolf Whistles and Catcalls; Am I a Bad Feminist? , the author audaciously details her perspective on the beauty of catcalling. By stating “I love catcalls. I love car toots. I love random men shouting, “Hello, beautiful!” as if my mere presence just made their day. I like being called "princess" and ignoring them as I giggle inside.” Overall, Paris along with other women seem to enjoy this attention. HOWEVER, the same cannot be said for the rest of the female population. As can be shown by a survey conducted by YouGov, documenting that 72% of Americans answered never when asked “Do you think it is ever appropriate to make a catcall, which is defined as making a whistle, shout, or comment of a sexual nature too someone passing by?”. Therefore, as ruled by a majority, catcalling is not acceptable. Which is yet again proven in a similar survey by YouGov asking participants this question; “Do you consider catcalls to be complimentary, or harassment?” 55% answered harassment, thus proving that the majority is discomfited. And since we live in a democracy, the majority always rules. So why can’t the…

In at least one story of creation there were three children born. There was a boy, a girl and another. Lady boys should be considered that third sex. Lady boys occur in all societies under a variety of names. In Thailand they are called Kathoey, in Mexico they are called Vestidas, in India they are Hirja, in the West they go under a variety of names like Shemale. Picture yourself in a grocery store. The woman next to you is on her cellular phone talking to what sounds like a boyfriend. You hear her say, “I’m going out with my girlfriends tonight, we all need some time to talk and catch up.” Now imagine yourself in the same situation, replacing the woman on the cell phone with a man. Would a man sound strange saying, “I’m going out with my boyfriends tonight, we just need to chat.”? This situation would more than likely cause the eavesdropper much confusion. It is not because men do not typically have male friends with whom they spend time with, while women have girlfriends with whom they do. The question presented from this situation lies…

    Ladies and Gentlemen

The society we live in today is not much fascinated by the notion of being a “lady or a gentleman”. According to Webster dictionary online, a gentleman is defined as a man of noble or gentle birth, or a man belonging to the landed gentry. To me, a gentleman is far more than that. A man can be of a noble birth but not a gentleman as a gentleman has certain qualities and characteristics that differentiate him for other men. The same is applicable to a woman being a lady; a lady is a woman who is virtuous, with a high level of proper and standard behavior. All females can be considered or called women, but not all women can be considered or called ladies as some may lack the characteristics that propel others to see them and call them a lady. If a man is seen opening and holding a door for a lady to walk through, he is considered a gentleman. I remember my friend and I talking about her boyfriend, and she said he was a gentleman because he would hold the door open for her when they go out, and he is always the one carrying her handbag when they go out. To her, these features shown by her boyfriend makes him a gentleman.…
