A reason for a business owner to employ someone could be to do with expansion of the business. If a company is pretty small but is growing very fast and the small amount of employees cannot cope, then the owner may decide to employ more people to share the work load. For example if Tesco was opening a new branch then it would need to employ more people to run the store because its staff numbers would not cope. This is essential to any business because growth is usually the way to maximise profits.
Another reason for employment may be that the company needs some fresh minds to the business. So if a member of staff has been at the business for say 30 years and hasn’t really changed a thing then the market may be “saturated” or at the “declining” stage of its lifecycle. Bringing in new minds may be a very good way of creating new ideas for the business and making more sales …show more content…
as a result. A good way of producing more sales is creating something new and fresh minds usually bring that.
Training can be bought into the business rather than the business actually training people itself. One set back to this may be that the company cannot mould its staff as easily. Some companies prefer to get people in and then train them because they can be adapted to the business straight away. So if an owner decides to employ someone but does not want to train anyone then they could just employ someone that has already been trained. Another setback to this is that the company will have to pay a larger salary because the person has already had training in certain areas.
Employment agencies are companies that promote jobs for employers looking for employees. They are usually partly funded by the government and also take a commission for each job they promote for the advertiser. For example “Total Jobs” who promote a whole range of different jobs and salaries.
There are two types of employment and the first of which is temporary employment and this is when a member of staff is recruited for a short member of time and then the agreement comes to and end when the work is all gone. Benefits to temporary staff include; ease of hire, flexible working hours, flexible and cheap wages because of the lack of training and also there is less probability of getting fired from a temporary job. There are also some drawbacks to look at including reduced liability protection and also the lack of training may mean that temporary staff becomes less skill than the permanent staff. The temporary staff may also just get the temporary job and not be motivated enough to work hard for their position if they know it is just a short term job.
Permanent staff are people who work for a company for a long and uncertain period of time. These people usually go through a much more vagarious examination process to get the job in the first place. They may be given termly or annual reports on how they are doing for the company. A benefit of having permanent staff could be that they become much more skilled at what they do as they go along. Also they are usually on a much simpler wage and can be paid monthly rather than through piece work. The employees should get a lot more comfortable with their surroundings at work and they may produce a lot better work while feeling comfortable.
West Suffolk College have a way to employ people and that is to choose people who are going to stay at the college for at least a year or so. This means that they are classed as permanent staff and they need them for long periods of time because if not the students would get so confused with their education. They also choose to use internal sources of recruitment and this is because it is a lot cheaper and the College can get some inside knowledge about the person before they even interview them. Some staff obviously via external sources and this is because new staff can come from another company and bring a whole new set of skills to the new place of employment.
There are two types of recruitment and these are:
Internal sources of employment are when a company employs someone to do another role within the business, so for instance Tesco employing a shelf stacker and then promoting them to floor manager or some other role with in the business.
It can also be a vacancy that pops up within the business and a person within the business just steps up the ladder and takes the job. So basically it is just someone inside of the business taking up another role within the company it works for. A disadvantage of this is that the company only uses the same people and therefore does not bring in fresh brains to pick. An advantage is that the person who the company employs already knows everything about the company and can take the business forward with their previous
knowledge.
External employment is just when the company employs someone that is outside of the business, so for example Apple needs a new floor sales man so they advertise a job in the paper and attract people outside of the business. A huge disadvantage is that the company has to advertise and that obviously costs money most of the time. It also brings in people who may not have experience in that certain company so they will need to be taught the ropes within the business. An advantage other than the obvious new minds into the business is that new people can be a lot more driven because they are trying to impress their leaders. Especially when they first start as they are trying to impress. When a new person is employed from outside of the business the company may benefit because the new people in are going to have way more enthusiasm compared to someone who has been there years.
