Classroom Management
One thing that I have always been worried about is proper classroom management. I have heard many stories of unruly students taking over the classroom or teachers who constantly put down students in front of the whole class. Bullying is also a problem not only for students, but teachers as well. Even though I have only been a substitute teacher, proper classroom management skills are something that is required no matter what the classroom setting is. In this paper I will be comparing two articles that both provide tips on how to better manage a classroom. According to Allen (2010) …show more content…
Barbetta, Norona, and Bicard (2005) said that “ignoring can be a valuable tool in reducing misbehaviors when used with behavior-building strategies…we should only ignore the behaviors motivated for our attention” (p. 15). For example, if a child is playing with their cell phone instead of reading a book, that behavior should not be ignored. This is not a behavior that is asking for the teachers’ attention. When a student responds loudly out of hand, then that behavior must be ignored. Ignoring alone doesn’t solve the problem. Behavior-building strategies, such as reinforcement of appropriate behaviors, teaching replacement behaviors, and reinforcing peers, must be used in combination with ignoring. “Ignoring teaches student what not, but does not teach them what to do instead” (Barbetta, et al., 2005, p. …show more content…
Being prepared to limit the amount of time in between subject changes is key to maintaining positive student-teacher relationships. One example provided is letting the students know a set amount of time before the next activity will start. (Barbetta, et al., 2005, p. 15). This will let the students know that it is time to get ready for the next activity. The teacher must be prepared ahead of time with the next activity so that they do not spend too much time away from the students’ attention. Also, positive reinforcement is a must during the
