Definition of Communication – the transmission of information and meaning from one person or group to another

Communication Process o Encoding – converting the idea of a sender into words or gestures that convey meaning o Channel – The medium through which a message is transmitted (computer, telephone, letter, memo, fax etc.) o Decoding – translating a message from its symbol form into meaning o Feedback – verbal or nonverbal responses to a transmitted message

Critical Thinking – having opinions that are backed by reasons and evidence. Identify and clarify the problem, gather info, evaluate the evidence, consider alternatives, and choose best alternative and test it.

Barriers to communication
o Noise – anything that disrupts the transmission of a message in the communication process o Bypassing – when misunderstandings results from missed meanings during the communication process

External Organization Communication -‐ Exchanging ideas with customers, suppliers, the government, and the public.

Internal organizational communication -‐ Exchanging ideas and messages with superiors, coworkers, and subordinates.
