Reactions of Three Isomers of Butanol
Purpose: To test the reactions of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols with acid and with an oxidizing agent.
Equipment and Materials:
Chemical safety goggles
Lab apron
Protective gloves
3 test tubes
Test-tube rack
Eyedropper
Dropper bottles containing the following
Butan-1-ol
Butan-2-ol
2-methylpropan-2-ol
Potassium permanganate solution, KMnO4(aq) (0.01 mol/L)
Concentrated hydrochloric acid, HCl(aq) (12 mol/L)
*Alcohols are flammable and should be kept away for heat sources or sources of ignition. They also should be used in a well-ventilated area.
*Concentrated hydrochloric acid is very corrosive and should be handled under a fume hood and by a teacher. The teacher should be notified if any spills occur.
*Potassium permanganate is corrosive and can stain the skin. Be very careful handling or wear gloves while transferring liquids. Inform the teacher of spills, if spilled on the skin, alert teacher and rinse under cold water.
Purpose:
1. Safety goggles, apron, and protective glasses were put on.
2. 3 test tubes were placed in a test-tube rack. 2 drops of butan-1-ol was then placed in the first test tube, 2 drops of butan-2-ol in the second, and 2 drops of 2-methylpropan-2-ol in the third.
3. The teacher then added 10 drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid in each of the 3 test tubes, under the fume hood. The mixtures were gently shaken. The test-tube rack was then brought back to the lab bench and allowed to stand for 1 minute. Observations were recorded.
4. The contents within the test tubes were disposed of properly and test tubes were cleaned
5. The 3 test tubes were set up again, as followed in step 2, but instead 4 drops were added to each test tube.
6. 20 drops of potassium permanganate solution was then added to each test tube. The mixture was shaken carefully.
7. Test tubes were allowed to stand for 5 minutes with occasional and gentle shaking. Observations and color of test tube tube
