With a population density of 583 species per millilitres, there were twenty (20) phytoplankton species found in Cabulig River. There are seven (7) orders in the class Bascillariophyceae. Three (3) of which belongs order Naviculales, one (1) of which to order Bascillariales, Eunotiaceae, Thalassiophsales, Rhoplaodiaceae, Surirellales and Achnanthes, and two (2) of which to Cymbellales. Out of seventeen (17) individuals, only five (5) were recorded in three stations …show more content…
After the exposure of the freshwater phytoplankton in the acid treatments, the following results were shown in the Table 3.
From Table 3, the population density of phytoplankton, before and after exposing to different acid treatments in Cabulig River, was shown. From the data gathered, the population of this phytoplankton before exposing to acid treatments ranging from 3.5 to 5.5 were high compared to the population of phytoplankton after exposing to acid treatments. On the other hand, the population of this phytoplankton in control set-ups after seven (7) days were high compared to the zero (0) day of experiment.
From Table 4, the population density of phytoplankton, before and after exposing to different acid treatments in Tagoloan River, was shown. From the data gathered, the population of this phytoplankton before exposing to acid treatments ranging from 3.5 to 5.5 were high compared to the population of phytoplankton after exposing to acid treatments. On the other hand, the population of this phytoplankton in control set-ups after seven (7) days were high compared to the zero (0) day days of …show more content…
According to Chen and Durbin (1994), pH affects physical characteristics of phytoplankton may have been caused by a number of different mechanisms including trace metal toxicity or limitation, reduced nutrient availability, or changes in the availability of carbon substrate.
The p-value of Station 1 is 0.019332, Station 2 is 0.016224 and Station 3 is 0.049858, which is lesser than the p-value critical 0.05, therefore the researchers accept the significant difference. The population of the phytoplankton in Cabulig River have a significant difference between different pH treatments. This means that the population of phytoplankton is greatly affected with varying pH
