How would a student feel if they knew that the USDA allowed the school to provide meals which could make them unhealthy, or even sick? Lunch, as most know, is a very important part of a student’s school day. The food eaten at lunch should provide enough energy to complete the school day as a focused, learning student, and, for some students, to get through after school activities such as athletics and clubs; however, it is being seen more and more often that this is not the case. Chatham County Schools needs to improve its school lunches because the quantity, quality, and cost ratios are inadequate for the success of their students.…

Recently there has been revisions to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and schools were required to overhaul their entire menus to provide the students with healthy and nutritious foods including fruits and vegetables. The new school lunch rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which has been implemented this fall. (Post Standard) The Hunger Act allows the USDA the opportunity to make reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs. With these revisions come strict guidelines from the federal government that each school district must follow in order to receive funding and reimbursement (National School Lunch Program, 2012, August p. 1). In this essay i will be comparing the positive and negative effects of these recent revisions to the NSLP. I will then discuss whether or not these changes are beneficial to the children receiving the meal and whether NSLP is leaving children hungry or helping children make healthy food choices.…
For millions of U.S. students, a hot meal has been part of the school day since Congress passed the National School Lunch Program in 1946. Although some students might say they enjoy the hot pizza served everyday, one cannot argue the amount of dripping grease coming off the slice. Coming to the conclusion that those who enjoy it might not be too concerned about their health. And it is obvious to say that foods like that are not at all healthy. Bringing lunch from home however, one can always put together a quality meal. Adding healthy options like cut fruits and vegetables that the school does not offer. It is logical to say that food made in cafeterias is strictly made for the amount of convenience instead of quality.…

Michael Pollan’s recent book In Defense of Food offers a new outlook on food today. Unlike many other writers of our time, he discusses the flaws of the nutrionist system we have adopted and encourages his readers to once again follow their familiar family recipes. According to Pollan, we should no longer feel guilty about eating a traditional meal because of its supposed unhealthiness. Instead, we should embrace our roots and cultural cuisine because that is the diet that kept our ancestors alive and healthy, unlike the “scientifically proven” Western diet of today that is causing mass obesity epidemics and other health problems.…
." The long list of options includes high-fat, low grade meats and cheeses and processed foods like chicken nuggets and pizza."( Walters & Heron). Does that sound good too you? Would you put that in body? If not why put it in ours?. For a fact about 55% peers agreed that’s not want we want our body's. This low-quality food is why many students would rather not eat. Cedric Bonsol, a junior who attends Bravo high school in Los Angeles said, “’Sometimes, I don't eat because I don't like it’" (Lin). This school meals are not up to par, and that is why so many students do eat the school provided lunches. To start off, school lunches taste horrible, and students deserve better. Many students will walk up to the cafeteria line expecting to enjoy what’s being served, when it reality, they approach the food and it looks disgusting. Multiple times students at Auburndale High school won’t enjoy the food that they picked out originally. Sitting down at the lunch table they would realize that the fruits such as apples or bananas are rotten or the chicken sandwich that was picked out is still undercooked and mushy. Imagine starving all day and then when it comes time for the lunch, nothing is appealing as it should be.…
