With tackling being taken out of the equation, Calaveras was looking to focus on the little things that will make it better once the season starts.
“We improved a lot defensively over the three-days of camp,” Hodgson said. “We improved on our coverages and out play up front. The biggest thing early on is just knowing what we are doing and being in the right spots. Comminution is the biggest thing that we need to work in. If you aren’t communicating as a defense, you will not be in sync and everyone’s not reallying together. We have the athletes and the strength to make things happen, we just need to communicate a little better.”
“I feel like we progressed pretty well over the camp,” Weatherby said. “We need to pick up the intensity but at this camp is hard to because it’s supposed to be a non-contact camp. I think the intensity will come around.”
The final scrimmage Saturday placed Sonora against Calaveras, and Ripon Christian and Central Catholic stood on the sidelines glued to the action. Calaveras was on defense first, and a tackle on a Sonora running back made the atmosphere a little more tense. Calaveras matched Sonora blow-for-blow, and with every hit, players on both team began to forget about the non-contact
