Drum Major Experience
Long before I earned the drum major position for my junior year, I had fallen in love with my marching band. As drum major, I was in the position to put that passion to work for the improvement of the band. However, as the competition season drew closer, I could see that the band was not where it needed to be. The marching technique was undisciplined, count structures were ambiguous, and the music was messy. It was painful to consider the trajectory of my band and the disappointing result at the end of it. My initial solution was to identify and solve individual cases. I watched for sloppy marching and made sure we drilled that technique more while practicing fundamentals. Mistakes in music were corrected by leading sectionals with the struggling instruments. I made sure to count aloud when marching without instruments to solidify the count structure. However, as competition season began, my efforts seemed to be in vain. After two weekends of disappointing competitions and another frustrating rehearsal, I stuck around in the parking lot with two other seniors. The three of us talked for hours about our frustrations and theorizing on the issues that the band was facing. The …show more content…
Our struggles weren’t coming from a lack of skill, they were caused by poor attendance and bad rehearsal etiquette. The next day, I gathered the band and started a discussion. I asked seniors to share their experience in band, their dedication, and what success means to them. I watched the seniors reflect on how they could improve their own contributions to leading the band. I outlined how we could improve our habits off the field in order to achieve the season that this band deserved. First, we prioritize rehearsal attendance. Second, we approach rehearsal with a mindset to improve together. Third, we treat every band member with respect and patience, whether giving or receiving

All of that nonsense about actually practicing flew in one ear and out the other as I marched into Honken’s office the next day to proclaim that I wanted to try out for All-State Band. I had no idea what I was getting into, but Honken went right along with it for the next five months, encouraging me to practice, but not forcing me to. He went about it right, where Mangold’s attempts at encouragement went wrong. Mangold told me that I had plenty of talent, and I could be so much better if I only practiced. Honken, instead, left out talent altogether and focused solely on effort.…

Marching band is analogous to a machine. All of the components must properly function in order to complete a certain task. Therefore, each member should possess dedication in order to produce a triumphant show and capture the audience’s attention. If one member fails, the whole organization collapses. Through these experiences, I learned that determination and dedication contributes to a successful lifestyle. Otherwise, dreams could never exist.…

As a member of nearly two years with Seminole, I have been able to experience an atmosphere of genuine love and acceptance that I now hope to further encourage and foster. This will be my sixth year as a part of the marching arts, during which I have had the privilege of playing and marching for two different ensembles, as well as maintaining leadership roles in both (leading two front ensembles and being relied on heavily at my place of prior attendance). With all the time I have dedicated to learning and plying my craft, I now seek to instill in others that same sense of wonder, amazement, and motivation that…

When I drum I lose track of time, the different types of rudiments put together in all different orders makes me happy. When I try to get faster at drumming I play to all sorts of songs. I’ll get lost for hours drumming. Over time I hope to join some of the best marching groups in DCI and WGI. I hope to join groups like Matrix, Phantom Regiment, or Blue Coats. When I want to learn more I’ll ask people like Mr.Reynolds or Dave our percussion instructors. My favorite part about drumming is how with the right touch you can make a bunch of loud noises and crashes become into beautiful music. I would like to learn how to play the actual drum set instead of just the marching snare. Over my marching band career I played lot of different pieces and…

Although last year I was not given the position of Drum Major, I was awarded the title of “Low Voice Section Leader.” Being named section leader made me feel so honored, and I was ecstatic to be in the position. As a section leader, I truly experienced what it is like to be a leader in a marching band. Although it is difficult, it is definitely rewarding. Throughout the marching band season, people often approached me for advice and help, and I was delighted to be able to assist different people and see how much they improved with my aid and…

Firstly, marching band allows for people to make a countless number of friends. For instance, when they start their freshman year, they are a fishy, upperclassmen help they out, and start to legitimately bond with them. Half way through the season they have already talked with all the band members, and made acquaintances and friends with the majority of them. Since band is gigantic, individuals will always have people there for them. For example, a bully can’t fight against one person because that means they are…

Ever since the beginning of this year the idea of being drum major has been floating in and out of my mind. I have spent many an occasion debating with myself if I wanted to keep marching with the band, one of my favorite things to do, or if I wanted to take my chances and try to make it as a drum major so that I could conduct, another favorite thing of mine. The lack of enthusiasm from my band friends does not help in favor of my wishes of becoming drum major. Though somewhere along the line my love for conducting won out, and now I find myself writing this essay and biting my nails as the nerves of try outs settle in my mind.…

The first year of marching band there were only 40 members; thus, everyone had to learn and play their part. In my head, playing and marching at the same time seemed like a piece of cake. In reality, it was as if I were learning a foreign language. I had to discipline myself to take extra time to practice the music and fundamentals. I still do this today, not with music, but through my studies.…

Sweat drizzles down my skin as it exits my pores trying to cool my heated body. The blood rushes through my veins pumping blood with the consistent pounding of my heart. Every breath, every second, every action, every thought; I am standing where everything counts. Artificial turf and grass crumpled beneath my torn black shoes and the thick silence only cut by the timed chants from afar. This is the last moment I will stand here for this reason. This is the last moment I will stand here with my family. This is the last moment of my marching band career. Many will say that this was a special group of kids, others will say that this year was a show that was made to make it. I, on the other hand, will say that this was because of seven years of dedication.…

This year, my first year in Color Guard and Marching Band, I’ve learned discipline and what it means to be a part of something bigger than me. Working with the other girls on guard, we work as a team to learn our routines and how to stay in sync with our flags which takes a lot of hard work and repetition. During our long, strenuous rehearsals, it is important to stay focused and pay attention to directions. By setting an example for the younger members, I hope to show them what it takes to be successful in what we do, because it cannot be done without a huge amount of commitment and pride to represent West and our Marching Band program.…

When it came to me joining the Ridgeview band program I was shown that things were no longer going to be as simple as they used to be. I had officially started when it was nearing the end of the summer and I had to go to band camp. While there I saw that no more would the music for marching only be half a page long, but instead multiple full sheet pages. During middle school, we were only required to memorize the half page of music that we were provided, but now it was a far more rigorous requirement that needed to be fulfilled. However, it wasn't only the music that received an increase in difficulty the style of marching…
