Drum Major Accomplishments
Being the Drum Major of a marching band is an incredible honor. This statement is particularly true for the Dunmore High School marching band. The DHSMB is renowned for having an amazing band, led by amazing Drum Majors. To be a Drum Major, one must possess a tremendous amount of skill and abilities that extend beyond playing an instrument. Some of these skills include: being a skilled musician, an innovative leader, and an effective motivator. I, Nico Summa, am the best choice for Drum Major for the 2016 / 2017 school year because I possess all of these astounding qualities and many more. As a musician with an exceptional musical talent that can greatly impact the marching band, I am the best candidate for Drum Major. It was not until my freshman year of high school that I realized just how talented I was in the musical field. I discovered that I have a gift that many people do not have. This gift allows me to be able to pick up almost any instrument, and with only a few weeks of practice, I am able to play that instrument at a relatively superior level! This talent of mine allowed me to qualify for district band and county band, and rank 1st chair on the French horn, 2nd chair on mallets, and 3rd chair on the flute! Having a gift like this can contribute to my success as a Drum Major because my knowledge of different …show more content…
Although last year I was not given the position of Drum Major, I was awarded the title of “Low Voice Section Leader.” Being named section leader made me feel so honored, and I was ecstatic to be in the position. As a section leader, I truly experienced what it is like to be a leader in a marching band. Although it is difficult, it is definitely rewarding. Throughout the marching band season, people often approached me for advice and help, and I was delighted to be able to assist different people and see how much they improved with my aid and

I was a percussionist during my high school tenure. As a school musician during my freshman year, I was in the high school band at both Northwest Christian and Dayton Christian. I went to Northwest during the first two quarters of my freshman and the high school band only had one concert, Then, I switched over to Dayton Christian during the last two quarters of my freshman year. The Dayton Christian High School Band was much larger than Northwest’s and performed two concerts, one at the Dayton Christian Cafeteria, and one out at Cedarville University. During my sophomore year at Dayton Christian, I was part of the high school band and the pep band. I was a bass drummer during pep band season; we performed at a stadium in Monroe every home football…

Marching band is analogous to a machine. All of the components must properly function in order to complete a certain task. Therefore, each member should possess dedication in order to produce a triumphant show and capture the audience’s attention. If one member fails, the whole organization collapses. Through these experiences, I learned that determination and dedication contributes to a successful lifestyle. Otherwise, dreams could never exist.…

I bought a drum set and watched YouTube videos to teach myself how to play. I joined the concert band in fifth grade and continued to take it as a class until sophomore year in high school. I also played in the jazz band for four years, the pep band for five years, and the show choir for two. The feeling I got in my stomach when I was up to bat in a baseball game was the same butterflies that I got when I played music with a group. The difference between baseball and playing the drums was that my hard work did not go unnoticed. Music is a universal language that brings people together, and nobody sits on the bench. Music was a healthy alternative for me because it taught me that everyone should be accepted and…

Ever since the beginning of this year the idea of being drum major has been floating in and out of my mind. I have spent many an occasion debating with myself if I wanted to keep marching with the band, one of my favorite things to do, or if I wanted to take my chances and try to make it as a drum major so that I could conduct, another favorite thing of mine. The lack of enthusiasm from my band friends does not help in favor of my wishes of becoming drum major. Though somewhere along the line my love for conducting won out, and now I find myself writing this essay and biting my nails as the nerves of try outs settle in my mind.…

I served as a Drum Major for my school's marching band in my senior year of high school. During that time, I worked some of the qualities needed to be a good music director, such as my conducting, my ability to focus for a long time, and how to stay calm in stressful situations. The summer before my sophomore year I picked up the piccolo for marching, and later used in the concert setting. As well as the piccolo, the summer before my senior year I learned how to play the saxophone. These two experiences allowed me to put myself back into the beginner mentality and build myself up. Additionally, I participated in honors bands in which I learned how to comprehend music at an even faster…

To be a drum major is to be a leader. Leaders take the time to go out of their way and stand up for what they believe in. Leaders take the initiative and set the standard for people to follow. To be a drum major for women, the first task is awareness. Anyone trying to get a point across must first make people aware of the problem and their cause for reaching out. The problem is that many women find themselves being stalked, file restraining orders, and still don’t get the justice they are searching for. Some women even change their whole identity to hide from their stalker in fear of getting hurt. To make people aware of this, one must take the initiative reach out to the common people. This year, my first year in Color Guard and Marching Band, I’ve learned discipline and what it means to be a part of something bigger than me. Working with the other girls on guard, we work as a team to learn our routines and how to stay in sync with our flags which takes a lot of hard work and repetition. During our long, strenuous rehearsals, it is important to stay focused and pay attention to directions. By setting an example for the younger members, I hope to show them what it takes to be successful in what we do, because it cannot be done without a huge amount of commitment and pride to represent West and our Marching Band program.…

With a wide spread of my arms and a clench of my fist, the last notes of Panic! at the Disco's song, "Victorious" came to an end. As I called the band to attention and to march off the football field, I knew the marching season for the Mead High School Marching Band was coming to an end after another year. I remember feeling jittery and excited despite the fact that I was composed before our eight minute marching show began. I hopped off of my podium, used my shaky hands to disassemble the platform, and exited the field to catch up with the band. Our performance at the St Vrain School District Band Night marked the end to my high school marching band career that started just four years prior.…

However, my leadership roles did not cease after that. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, I had gone through an audition process to become the Drum Major for the Liberty High School Marching Band. This process included: receiving signatures of nomination from peers, attending scheduled workshops teaching how to lead the band, a teaching evaluation, a parade route evaluation, submitting a formal application essay and a leadership questions form, receiving a letter of recommendation, and an…

Hello! My name is Nsa Ita. During my years before being accepted to Texas Southern University, I was a student attending Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas. While in high school I was a member of the Vandegrift High School Drumline. We placed first in many drumline competitions and my junior year won first place at the UIL State Competition. We also had the best grades out of any organization in the school my whole four years. I not only kept my grades up because of drumline, but also because I want to become a doctor. Here at Texas Southern I am an Biology major so that after I graduate I can apply to medical school and be on my way to becoming an anesthesiologist.…

I also did not get the snare drum part for marching band this season. I thought I was already getting the part because I was practicing with the other snare drummers. Unfortunately, there was only room for two people playing snare drum because the amount of eight graders that were joining was not sufficient.
