As a member of nearly two years with Seminole, I have been able to experience an atmosphere of genuine love and acceptance that I now hope to further encourage and foster. This will be my sixth year as a part of the marching arts, during which I have had the privilege of playing and marching for two different ensembles, as well as maintaining leadership roles in both (leading two front ensembles and being relied on heavily at my place of prior attendance). During this time, our percussion scores ranked top five in our division three years running, with a noticeable drop after my dismissal. Wanting full disclosure, I feel it necessary to say that I was in fact asked to leave the school on account of my sexuality, but without such a negative incident I would not be where I am today as a fully invested member of the Seminole Warhawk family, whom I cherish dearly. At Seminole, in addition to my roles in the band, I have established and founded two new societies on our campus for the purpose of enhancing literacy within the student body (Sigma Tau Delta and the Seminole High Literacy Council). Every year, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States. That’s one student every 26 seconds. 7,000 students each day. The majority of these students drop out due to a literacy related issue. Seeing this as a huge problem, we began the Seminole High School literacy initiative with programs to launch the fall of next year. That being said, I can hardly express my full measure of gratitude for the astounding love and kindness expressed to me by others as I transitioned into my life here at Seminole. In this short period of time I have experienced a greater level of respect amongst peers, a deep-seeded passion and dedication for what we do, and a more vibrant community of musicians and performers than I ever could have begun to imagine. The group we have here is truly unique, and having an outside perspective I can truly appreciate the power this program has to change
