The stadium is well known for its hosting duties of the SEC baseball tournament, showcasing the top twelve teams in the Southeastern Conference. However, most Friday nights, the stadium is occupied by Hoover football fans and players. Once the band arrives, we line up and march into the stadium to our cadence. Marching begins right outside of the buses, continues into the stadium, and ends once we have reached the section of the stadium, which has been designated for the band, prior to the fans arrival. The band plays a few stand chants while the Buccanettes dance along. Once the clock strikes 10 minutes until the game, the band marches behind the visiting stands to line up for pregame. Pregame includes the entire band marching onto the field to a cadence, turning towards the audience, standing at attention, then playing the national anthem and alma matter. After these two songs are played the band will march into a new formation on the field that will allow the players to run through while the band plays the fight song. Buccanettes stand in front of the band doing our stand dance to this tune, the cheerleaders held a huge sign for the players to run through and the colorguard would run across the field with large Buccaneer flags. The audience’s reaction made the all the previous hours of getting ready worthwhile. The student section was filled with shakers, lettermen, and hundreds of students. The rest of the stadium was filled with fans from the community. After pregame, the band would march back to the stands to begin more stand chants. The band played tunes such as ESPN, sunshine, the fight song, word up, and many others. At the beginning of the second quarter we would again march out of the stadium where stretching would take place to warm up for the halftime show. The first thing…

Music, in itself, is its own language; for some it’s easy to understand, others take it to the next level and add choreographed movement to it, such as marching bands. An average marching wind ensemble practice begins with a simple stretch and review of the basic marching techniques. They begin one week before the fall semester starts. Normal “band camp” days involve basic technique practices on the field in the morning, rehearsal after lunch, and a combination of the marching and music after their dinner. They meet three days a week during the fall semester; two and a half hours each session, depending on whether the directors think it’s necessary. They must learn a pre-game performance, their halftime show, and all stand-tunes (the short songs that are…

Sadly, even after all of their hard work, no one rarely ever goes to football games for the marching band performance. They don’t because society has shown them that marching band isn’t important through the history of marching band, the lack of publicity towards marching band, the cultural neglectance of the halftime performance, the lack of funds towards marching band committees, neglecting to regard how hard marchers work on a daily basis, and refusing to let marching band be considered a sport. Marching band stemmed from army bands, and the main reason that musicians were involved in army band was because they were too weak to be in the actual army. There is never a segment during a news broadcast that has to do with the daily schedule of marching band, as it is with sports. Marching band is unique to American culture, yet, society has neglected its importance. Many marching bands around the area are going into financial crises because of the lack of funds and sponsorships for them. Marchers are some of the most hard-working people that are involved in a sport, yet, people neglect all of the hard work that they put into the performance. Marchers practice the same amount of hours that other sports do and they also have uniforms and equipment that is needed for them, yet teams such as football and basketball are allowed to be documented as sports and marching band can’t.…

Prior to every home football game, I find myself parading around the parking lots of the Goodman campus with the Marching 97 and my fellow cheerleaders. During this long trek, there are numerous stops, to perform shorter versions or the exhaustive full length of GRL2*. Every individual at each stop knows the words to the four-song montage as they have known the lyrics for decades. The current students of Lehigh rarely know this old tradition; however, the cheerleaders, band, and alumni sing and dance to it with spirit time after time. This tradition is not just a tradition; it is comprised of folklore within each song that refers to Lehigh past and present.…
