HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS ANALYST VS DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR CAREER PATH EVALUATION
Introduction
Alexander Hamilton eagerly entered the Upward Bound facility seeking direction and information regarding career paths. As a result, this report is designed to analyze and compare the career choices of Healthcare Systems Analyst and Database Administrator. In addition, this report will provide Mr. Hamilton with a wide range of information to help him develop motivational strategies to achieve success in his career choice.
During the initial interview, we determined the key factors that were most crucial to Mr. Hamilton in terms of potential occupations. Subsequently, this report provides analytical insight on job description, employment outlook, educational requirements, and wage data. Likewise, Mr. Hamilton expressed extreme skepticism about leaving the New York area. However, it was suggested that he evaluate the employment possibilities of relocating to other parts of America.
Substantial data from this report derives from The Occupational Handbook published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a nationally recognized source of career information, designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making important decisions about their future professional career path(s) (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2011). Furthermore, Salary.com, Inc. provided data regarding local and national wages as it pertained to the professions of Healthcare Systems Analyst and Database Administrator (Salary.com,Inc., 2012).
This report concludes with the recommendation that based on the information acquired via the interview questionnaire and research findings, Mr. Hamilton should consider a career specializing in either Healthcare Systems Analysis or Database Administration. Career Overview
This section will provide a clear description of the two careers: Healthcare Systems Analysis (HSA) and Database Administration (DA). One of the various departments that Healthcare Systems Analysis is important is the military. Like civilians, military personnel get sick and need to be taken care of, which includes keeping up with the day to day medical operations in a technical way. This position involves being a consultant to the Deputy Commander for Administrations and the Deputy Commander of Patients Services. The consultant position entails is involved with data quality, medication management, nursing performance improvement, manpower analysis, workload accounting, space utilization, cost/expense reporting systems, and business analyses (U.S. Army Medical Department, 2012).
The areas of concern are business process planning, staffing, and productivity. Some the responsibilities include generating solutions through data collection and trend analysis for fiscal, clinical, and operational challenges facing the command and staff (U.S. Army Medical Department, 2012). Additional responsibilities include monitoring and analyzing nursing staffing and acuity activity using the Army Workload Management System for Nursing - internet (WMSNi) in order to calculate and capture nursing staff requirements (U.S. Army Medical Department, 2012). The second position is Database Administration (DA).
Database Administrator is the human component behind the databases that run the lives of corporations and other entities worldwide. The primary function of DAs s to store, organize and manage information. DAs set up the databases in accordance with the needs of the business and ensure operational efficiency, upgrades/fine-tuning, and running tests on modifications when they are required (U.S. News & World Report LP., 2013).
Security is also a big part of database creation. Safeguards are essential to handling complex issues such as intruders, data theft, and possible infections of the system. DAs must have the ability to think quickly, some difficult problems, communicate important findings, and perform consistent maintenance on the database (U.S. News & World Report LP., 2013). Career Outlook
This section provides a brief outlook of the two positions: Healthcare Systems Analyst and Database Administration. The employment road for the Healthcare Systems Analyst is similar to that of the Computer Systems Analyst. This position is expected to grow 22 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than average occupations of the same type (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, 2013). A great reliance on computer systems in organizations including those in the healthcare field, through the economy will lead to an increased demand for this occupation (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, 2013). Employment for database administrators is projected to grow 31 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, 2013). The swiftness of its growth in information gathering by corporations, as well as increased need for database security measures, will contribute to the growth of this occupation (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, 2013).
Educational Requirements
In order to become a Healthcare Systems Analyst there are three possible educational routes to take: Business Administration and Management, General, Business/Commerce, General or Organizational Leadership. The recommended major for this list is Business Administration and Management. Within this field the students is exposed to business, finance, management, economics, logistics, and marketing (MyMajor, 2013).
Candidates for the Database Administration position need to have a Graduate degree in computer science. This individual is required to take the next step and earn a Master 's degree in software engineering. The degree itself must be related to the professional DBA, a course or diploma in computer technology or in IT engineering, computer operating systems and languages (Education Requirements, 2013).
National Wage Data
According to the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (2013), the average amount of money that a Healthcare Systems Analyst makes is $77,740. This amount is draw from the amount of money from a similar position computer systems analyst. Data Administrators on average make yearly wages of $72,900. The location of the position makes a difference in the amount of pay (BLS, 2010). Those individuals that chose work at facilities that create computer systems earned an average of $81,050 (BLS, 2010). Yonker’s Jobs
The most crucial element in job decisions is the availability to apply for the desired position which means there must be at least one position posted as open.
Monster is one of the premier websites in order to find jobs within any given city. At the time of this job search there were no openings for Healthcare Systems Analyst. There were however openings for the Database Administrator position. In the case of Database Administrator in Yonkers, NY a position was posted 19 days ago (Monster, 2013). This position is with emerging Health IT which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Montefiore Medical Center. The pay for the position was no listed however additional Data Administrator positions in nearby areas were offered for amounts such as $135,000 to $170,000 for a senior position (Monster, …show more content…

Conclusions and Recommendations
Throughout the research process there were several difficulties in acquiring information for the position of Healthcare Systems Analyst. Many times a comparison in material was required from the computer analyst position. Both positions would require that computers be used however the former position is specifically found in the healthcare field. Some important aspects of the position include: performance improvement, manpower analysis, data collection, trend analysis, and data quality. The Database Administrator listed several aspects such as creating, maintaining, and protecting data information that has been collected then stored.
In the future span from 2010 to 2020 the Healthcare Systems Analyst position will only advance 22 percent compared to the 31 percent in the Database Administrator position.
The difference between the wages in the HSA and DA positions is $4840; however, the amount of the DA can rise to $81,050 with companies that create computer systems. In terms of education there were no references about the amount of time it would take to achieve the degrees. For HSA Business Administration and Management, General was required and for DA, Graduate in computer science, Master 's in software engineering and the professional degree in DBA. There was additional education such as IT engineering and computer operating systems.
The target location for the job positions was in Yonkers, NY were the results yielded that Healthcare Systems Analyst positions were not available at this time, however, there were several positions open for Database Administrator starting at $135,000. The recommendation for Mr. Hamilton from this report is to the Database Administrator position.
