Carnelian Research Paper
I’ve never thought much about what my favorite gemstone is, since I’ve always thought rocks were just rocks. Since I’ve become involved in magick I’ve begun to view things differently, and recently I’ve become more aware of the physical items that I keep around me. One such item is a carnelian owl figurine that I always keep close beside me. Furthermore, I recently decided to purchase a set of gemstone runes that are made from carnelian. Without conscious thought I’ve found that time after time I’ve been drawn to carnelian, and after studying the physical and metaphysical properties of carnelian I’ve come to a conscious understanding of why.

Physically carnelian is a translucent blood-red to reddish-orange variety of chalcedony. Chalcedony is a variety of microcrystalline quartz, or quartz that is composed of microscopic fibers. Carnelian’s coloration is due to the presence of iron oxide impurities, which can uniformly color it or create bands of various hues. Therefore, what makes carnelian the beautiful quartz that is, is the impurities that it contains. Upon reflection I realized that this fact is one of the reasons I’m drawn to carnelian, since it repudiates traditional societal values concerning purity and beauty. In our society pure is considered the ideal and impure is considered flawed or bad. In

Physically carnelian reflects my belief concerning flaws and imperfections, which is reflected in carnelian’s beauty being a result of its imperfection. In addition, without consciously realizing the metaphysical effects of carnelian I’ve been keeping it near me, and have benefited from it in numerous ways. It has helped to alleviate my depression, and has stimulated my mind and helped with mental confusion. Therefore, whether I realized it or not, I do have a favorite stone, which has helped me in many important

Saint José Ramón Agustín Pro Juárez, also known as Saint Miguel Pro, was born on January 13, 1891, in Guadalupe, Mexico. He was one of eleven children, the oldest boy. Sadly, four of his siblings died as babies or young children. From an early age, he was heartily spiritual, as well as mischievous; he constantly entertained his family with his humor and practical jokes. St. Miguel was a dauntless child and sometimes took his pranks and fun too far, putting him in several near-death mishaps. The third oldest in his family, St. Miguel was unquestionably very close with his older sister. After she entered a convent at age 20, he started to recognize his own calling to the priesthood. Though his father wanted him to continue with the family business, Miguel lived for God and entered the Jesuit novitiate in El Llano, Michoacán in 1911. He had been studying with the Jesuit priests for only a year when a religious revolution broke out in Mexico and by 1914, the Jesuits were forced to flee the country.…

Engraved, chased, and etched, the interlacing Celtic-like scrolls and knots wrap delicately and symmetrically around the vessel. Serpentine handles flank the widest and uppermost portion of the vase while twin stylized bird head figures frame the rim. In the center of the vase sits a stylized Viking-like mask or helmet. Symmetrically placed gemstones adorn the vase from the rim to the foot, while contrasting matte lavender, light green, and golden yellow enamels sit just behind the gleaming silver scroll patterns and echo the colors of the gemstones.…

Behind the beautiful steely blue Hope Diamond lies a cruel and often bloody history, a history that is full of mystery and intriguing stories. This ornate diamond has changed hands many times throughout its long past. The most interesting part of this is the fact that it is said that many of its owners have met with a gruesome fate. It is because of this occurrence that there is an alleged curse behind the precious gem, whether true or not. As stated by Richard Kurin, “[the curse] is only one small piece of a long and lustrous story…” (Kurin). From its supposed origins in an ancient Indian statue, through the hands of Royalty, and on to the ultra-rich, the Hope Diamond leaves a fascinating yet often brutal mark on many of those in its path.…

This Greek sculpture carved with parian marble was found on the island of Paros in 1775 and consists of a young girl wearing a woolen garment with her head bowed giving her farewell to two pet doves. The young girl’s facial expression is strong, yet somber while she holds one dove close to her serene face, while the other dove rests on the young girl’s left hand (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2000). This sculpture would have been established in Greek cemeteries in memory of the deceased and symbolizes a young girl’s love for her pets and expresses emotion. The surface of the marble used to carve this sculpture is smooth and has a visual quality that is a representational illusion (Sayre, 2007). This particular work of art fits into the context of the time period primarily because the sculpture was carved at a time when decorated gravestones did not appear in Athens and parian marble was highly prized in antiquity (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2000). This Grave monument of a young girl depicts her as she would have been in life, which during the 5th century; the deceased were able to be identified by more than their gender and occupation, but also by their age.…

A popular quote from the movie Birdman reads, “ a man becomes an informer when he cannot be a soldier.” The same concept goes for my interviewee, Richard, or as he prefers, Rick, Chernicky. Rick is an aspiring journalist and former soldier who hails from the heart of the PA snow belt region, otherwise known as Edinboro, PA. In his free time, Rick enjoys the outdoors, art, exercise and watching more abstract movies such as the one quoted above: Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). As each generation passes and new discoveries are being made, some inventions or ideas are being redefined. [← Consider adding the term “and” in between “passes” and “new”. This would complete the introductory phrase “As each generation passes and new discoveries are being made”.] Our lives have always been better than the ones of our ancestors and most of the time we learned to not make the same mistakes or to follow the same ideas that are no longer valid in today’s day and age. This translates to medicine as well. [← This currently appears as a fragment. You can connect it to the sentence before it but I can also recommend simply changing “which” into “this”. Using “this” would turn the fragment into a complete sentence.…
