Many times, the general education teacher is the person who first sees issues in a child that could benefit from the IEP. Regardless of who determines that a student is struggling, the general education teacher must be a part of the team that creates a child’s IEP, as he or she can provide insight about the child’s needs and how they can be met within the classroom (U.S. Department of Education, 2007). Additionally, the IEP itself can play a part in the general education classroom if the student’s least restrictive environment allows him or her to remain there. The IEP could require a general education teacher to adapt to a different curriculum or implement related services within the classroom. Gibb and Dyches (2007) outline seven steps teams should employ in writing an IEP as listed within IDEA. At this time I have not personally developed an IEP; however, I have implemented the accommodations and modification under the supervision of special education teacher instruction for example, redirecting a student’s attention when the student is off task, getting eye contact before giving directions, repeating to the student so they can better understand what is expected of them, simplifying directions for them into short phrases also demonstrating the task before proceeding with the work, providing verbal praise when the student complies with the directions, does a good job, completes work, when given a test allowing the student as much time as need to finish the test, braking down task into manageable units such as reducing written task.
