Case Study: Portage Inc.
While scanning through the many business choices on missionstatements.com I knew I wanted to research a small business, I finally settled on Portage Inc. Missionstatements.com lists their mission as “At Portage we provide competent, responsive, and cost-effective services to customers in federal, state, tribal, and local governments, and private industry. We assist tribal governments pursuing self-determination by developing management strategies for environmental protection and resource development. We provide employment opportunities, internships, and mentoring, to Native American and other disadvantaged students pursuing higher education in natural resource and environmental protection fields.” Portage’s website states their statement as …show more content…
Portage Inc. has been ranked a Top Idaho Company for 6 years in a row (Inc, 2015). Inc also named Portage to the list of fastest growing businesses 6 times in the last 10 years. Engineering News-Record also named Portage a Top Environmental Firm in 2015 for the seventh consecutive year. (Engineering News-Record, 2015) In addition to a well run and fast growing business Portage regularly celebrates safety milestones. Four years have passed without incident on a uranium tailings cleanup Portage manages in Utah. (Herndon, …show more content…
I searched their website, a few search engines and even the local paper in Idaho Falls wher the company is based. This isnt to say Portage isn’t doing this but it may also be the reason the Mission Statement has changed.
Though Portage doesn’t have an online record of supplying scholarships to tribal members they are partnering with them in other ways. Due to erosion a dam spillway had collapsed on Santa Clara Pueblo land. Portage provided engineering design services for the repair of Pin Dee Pond as part of their Northern New Mexico Outreach Program. Projects like the Santa Clara spillway are great because they allow the Portage staff to put their expertise to work to directly benefit the communities where we operate and to see direct benefits from our works” says Portage President Mike

If the Government were to promote and fund volunteers to live on and work with the Native American communities, the change would be phenomenal. In the case of Sacred Road, this organization has been operating for several years nonstop helping to create a social connection with the natives. From my experience with Sacred Road, I have witnessed the effort this organization has put forth to help the natives. Some of the notable projects that Sacred Road has been undergoing is housing. Often As mentioned previously, the reservation living conditions are dismal. During my time in the summer of 2012, my brother-in-law worked in home of a single pregnant mother of three. Besides the normal signs of disrepair such as peeling paint, leaky roof, and refuse, this home featured two bathrooms with nonfunctioning toilets.…

Since then the Hudson’s Bay Company built a general store, which slowly developed while most of the natives still lived outdoors and brought their own food to the table. (Aulakh, 2012) During the 20th century, expansion began and houses along with water and sewage treatment were incorporated into the land. (Aulakh, 2012) Today, development of the society and infrastructure have come to a standstill, primarily stemming from the reserves financial issues. “Attawapiskat hasn’t changed in decades ... I don’t think it ever will. It can’t. I was born here, I was raised here and I have raised all my kids here. The problems I saw four decades ago ... they are problems we still face”(Aulakh, 2012) said Rosie Koostachin a resident of the area. The issues faced by people of Attawapiskat shows that developing of the society and care for its people has not changed, despite the funds they received over the years. Children in the area are not attending school regularly, and the dropout rate is over 50%. Similarly employment opportunities are at a low and poverty is high. (Aulak, 2012) This trend sets a bad example for the younger generation and is evidently reflected in the drop out rate. Overall, it comes down to the cost of living being too high for families to live comfortably. Residents of Attawapiskat think the situation can not be mended, and question Attawapiskat’s long term sustainability. (Aulak, 2012)…
