Should High Schools Not Open an Hour Later Than Normal? What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when someone says, “High Schools should not open until 8:30 A.M”? There have been recent discussions about schools not starting until 8:30 A.M, some schools agree and some do not. Some believe starting later in the day will improve test grades if students sleep more, while other schools say there are more downsides to this idea than positives. While I firmly oppose schools staring at later times, I will prove to you that schools starting later is a waste of time and money, and very inefficient to our community and to parents with kids in high school. According to the article, First Bell to Ring and Hour Later at Mercer Middle, “With after school activities Ericka doesn’t leave till’ 5 P.M. If classes start later extracurricular activities would, too.” With that she would start to eat dinner, which would take and hour at most, so now it is 6 o’clock. Then she would start homework, which would take an hour and a half at most, so now its 7:30 P.M. But with other people they have sports, with sports comes 2-3 hours of practice. If schools end later than normal, so would the ending times for practice for some students. Which mean starting homework later, eating dinner later, also most importantly going to bed later. With all that time to do extracurricular activities and homework, students would have less time to spend time with their families, which is crucial to the parents. It is crucial to the parents because their schedule is effected as well! With having dropping their kids off to school later than normal, would change their whole schedule dramatically, with the jobs they have, they would be home an hour later than they have before just from their kid’s school changing their own starting time. With all of the extracurricular activities comes the disruption of schedules for both students and their
