Although Suzie is working as a clinic manager for 12 years, she is not an expert in her career. Even though she has some experienced employee, she would not trust them. She checks everything by herself, so this is time-consuming for her and that is problematic since she has other tasks to do. If she was a good practice manager, she would mentor and prepare employees to perform their tasks in higher-level. She may be very willing to let her employees take on some of her responsibilities, but continues to overload herself with work because she believes it is faster to do it herself rather than teaching the responsibilities to someone else or trust on others. What would you recommend for her to retain good staff members at the practice?
I would recommend Suzie to trust on her team members and let them know that their strengths and skills are important to the completion of the task and the success of her team. She should learn to see the potential in her team and she just needs to make sure that she has adequately prepared her team members for the tasks she assigns. Suzie can become a better practice manager if she trusts her employees. She should train her employees and keep the communication open with her employees, so they (Joy and Linda) know that they can ask for Suzie’s help if they need help. Suzie should remind herself that in a teamwork, each employee has its own task responsibility, and she can guide them, but she should stop reviewing employee’s tasks every day.
