For my business model, I selected a steak restaurant similar in style to Outback Steakhouse. My model was minus the Australian touch, like Outback has, however. My restaurant is named Heather’s Steak and Shrimp, and it a franchise. It has a great personality and environment, employees and customers are very relaxed and friendly, unlike a lot of stiff and impersonal restaurants I have been to. We, the staff, know customers by name as much as possible, therefore developing “regulars”, who feel at home when they come in to dine with us. Heather’s Steak and Shrimp is a profitable business model that uses Organizational Structure and Culture. The first step in implementing a successful business model requires good organizational design. This creates a structure and culture that does multiple things. Our good organizational design must motivate and coordinate my employees to perform at a high level in groups, teams, and departments. It also has to enhance my company’s ability to create different and creative entrees, beverages, and desserts that customers want to try and buy. This increases operating costs and revenues. Our organizational design solves problems about goals not met, organizational conflicts, and lack of cooperation from any level of employment; be it general managers, head chefs, front of the house manager, shift leader, or employee. We, as a company, are able to operate more efficiently and effectively with a good organizational design. All of these factors lead to increases in Heather’s Steak and Shrimp company profitability. As a general manager of this company, I and all of the owners and other managers must be prepared for change to the company’s structure and culture, should anything change in the global environment. This preparation for change is called the contingency approach to organizational design. All companies, mine included, are always changing their structures to better fit with their business models. Taking care of this contingency approach is a very important managerial task. We have certain employee expectations for the restaurant.
We have cultivated professionalism and first rate customer service for all staff, especially for the front of the house employees, because they are the ones who come into direct contact with our customers. The host staff is the first faces they see when they arrive, and they should be smiling and inviting. Then the servers should be knowledgeable about the menu and courteous to our guests at all times. Honesty is valued, and high ethical values and behaviors are expected and noticed. We promote from within, so having these qualities increases your chances greatly. The scheduling manager considers all requests for days and time off; however, employees must understand not all requests can be honored. Always respect and help each other, because while a server is there to take care of their sections, we are still one team and have to help each other out. It makes all of our jobs so much easier when we learn that teamwork helps us get done
faster. Heather’s Steak and Shrimp is a functional structure. This is when managers group a company’s activities, employees, and resources into functions. A function is a group of people who work together and perform the same types of tasks or hold similar positions in a company. For my company, there is an owner with stakeholders, Marketing and Product Development function, a Sales function, A Human Resource Management function, Operation and Materials function, and an Accounting and Finance function.
