Stalin wanted everyone to be communist and have a dictator. The Soviets in East Berlin were very mean to the civilians and tortured them. This is why the people tried to go to West Berlin. West Berlin was ruled by the United States, Britain, and France. It was a Democratic state and many people wanted to be there instead of East Berlin. Estimated 5,000 people made it safely across the wall during the time of the Wall (Rosenberg). The first person killed trying to cross the wall was Gunter Litfin on August 24, 1961 (Deardon) As people started to figure out the easy simple way cross the wall, the Wall's security tightened up and it made it harder for people to get across. Some of the simple attempts were throwing a rope and climbing over it, but other people were brash and rammed trucks and busses into it (Rosenberg). When the security got stronger, people that successfully made it over started to dig tunnels under the Wall and flew over them with hot air balloons, but the people that failed were either shot or captured and thrown into jail (Kempe 501).
