Cay 101: Foundations For College Success
When I began my senior year of high school, I was tired and unmotivated and chose to give up and not put my full effort into all my school work. I was so excited, my last year of high school. I was always told since I was a freshman that your junior year would be the hardest and the most important because those are the grades that colleges will mostly be looking at and that your senior year would be the easiest because you're mostly taking electives and you only need to focus on you main courses such as economics and english to graduate. When I started school this year I put off all my homework till last minute, I was absent more than usual, my work was sloppy, and I wasn't really participating. I kept thinking that all I need is a 65 in …show more content…

This classes teaches you how to be successful in college and ways to do that. I've learned so many strategies from the On Course textbook. I was lacking in motivation, so I tried the formula for motivation and found my motivation level to be lower than I would like it to be. My value on my education was a 5. My expectation on my education to be a 5. And my motivation was a 25 which was very low. To improve my score and try to make it increase I set goals using DAPPS which is dating my goals, making them achievable, positive and personal, and specific. I also created my life plan. The life plan made me realize my dreams as a student and what my short term goals were. Setting goals using DAPPS really encouraged me and made me want to accomplish them. Dating my goals made it feel like a challenge and that made me want to go for it more. Achievable made me think that I can do this and that there's no way that I can't. A positive goal was easy for me to think of. Lastley, being specific made me visualize what the outcome of my goal will look like. Using the DAPPS made my motivation …show more content…

By using this I have discovered what my goals and dreams are. I wanted to pass this class and go on to college but that's not going to happen if I fail english. I realized that all that busy work she was giving us wasn't actually busy work. She showing us how hard it can be in college and most of the material now that I come to think of it helped me with everything I did in that class whether it was vocab or learning to write a better thesis statement. My goal for that class was to pass with an 80 or high by the end of each marking period and to not slack on all my work and to do it well and on time. Now I actually do my work ahead of time so that I don't forget and I have time to go back and look over it and sometimes I have a little free time to myself. My current grade in my CCC English 102 is an 89 and so far i've been doing things days before they are actually do so I make sure it's

I joined a fraternity the following year. After joining the fraternity I put even less thought into my future and I just wanted ti enjoy my college years and worry about it later on. Around the same time I was going through a rebellious teen phase at home with my mom and that proved too stressful all together. I slacked even more and, failed a class one semester. I would go to class and did just enough to get by without caring for the consequences. Well it all hit me at once my 4th year. I was already behind on credits and had to seriously think about my future. I looked at the summary of the past few years and I became extremely disappointed in myself for wasting so much time and not taking my education serious. I told myself that this is not how I wanted to live my life anymore. I took a step back during the summer vacation to reevaluate my actions and my life and try to change my priorities to get back on track. After doing a lot of thinking I changed a lot. I decided that I wanted to go back to school and get a restart on my grades and my college education but in a different major. As a consequence I would be in school for much longer but if in the end I would study what makes me happy and I would be more content…

To me this was meaningful. I learnd something and I applied it, then I created a paper from it. How many times can one say that about an undergraduate class they took in college. Through the last nine weeks this class and my experiences have taught me so much about how to prepare myself for my future not only in my college courses but in my career path too. I started this path not really knowing what to expect but in desperate need for a change in my life. In all reality I didn’t realize how unprepared I actually was. This course imp articular taught me so much! I learned how to set goals for myself so that I could stay motivated and be able to visually see my completion of each goal. You separate your goals into short term and long term so that you can effectively schedule your tasks at hand in the correct order to accomplish all of your goals. When I realized that I had a fear of failing I was also directed in this course to learn how to overcome procrastination. It is easy to be motivated in this learning environment by reading the stories and opinions of the other students here. The more motivated you are the less you procrastinate! Managing my time was definitely one of the hugest struggles for me through this experience so I was thankful that this topic was covered so thoroughly in the past weeks. I actually am starting to enjoy making the calendar for each week that organizes the lives of my daughter and I. Another lesson that goes hand in hand with time management is creating an effective learning and study environment. It’s so important to be able to get the absolute most out of every minute of your time. To do this I’ve found that when studying you need to be able to focus yourself on nothing other than your schoolwork and assignments on hand. With all of the things I have learned by my experiences in the past few weeks I feel more confident about my pursuit in my career goals. I feel this has set me up to succeed. I have been able to learn how to think outside the box and be independent in my decision making process.…

I was 18 years old when I first enrolled to Modesto Junior College with over- self confidence and energy. In the beginning of the semester , I attended the classes and took notes , however since high school I was able to pass my class with As and Bs without really working hard , I assumed college will be the same. After paying international tuition and 16 units , I decided that I will go to class when I felt like it. In the middle of the semester, I was barely getting low Cs in the class and failing most of my class. I had a really bad fixed mindset because I did not want to look like I am not smart or intelligent anymore…

I should have focused more on my grades this year. By attending many social events, waiting until the last minute to complete work, and refusing to study my grades began to drop. I feel that if I would have put more effort into my school work I would have achieved the grades I am capable of getting. By hanging out with friends and putting off work my grades gradually began to drop. Your senior year is not the year to slack off in; it would have better prepared me for college and set the tone for how I should work if I had just put in the effort necessary to achieve outstanding grades. When in college I cannot make this same mistake; all of my dreams of obtaining a decent job after college could be ruined.…

I started my first year of college with my life prearranged. I had a ridiculous notion that everything was going to be a piece of cake. I was going to join different clubs, do lots of research, make the dean’s list, make my parents proud and attend as many parties as I could. However, now when I look back, I realized that I was too comfortable in my life. I thought I was ready to overcome every obstacle that was thrust upon me but I was sadly mistaken. College was a culture shock. I concluded that college is an entirely different universe, then high school. My GPA dropped for the first time in my life from a 3.7 in high school to a 2.8. The decline in my GPA made me realize that my journey to becoming a doctor is not always going to be easy. It made me hunger to go to medical school even more, to overcome the academic and emotional hurdles, and…

As I got older and got into high school, things got really ugly my freshman year. Hanging out with the wrong crowd changed my whole perspective on school and how I should apply my knowledge to school work. I can honestly say that my highest grade was probably a C out of the whole year. The beginning of my life changing didn’t take place till my sophomore year when I met my older cousin who decided to be hard on me in school. Part of that was him keeping me into football and other sports he thought I would be good in. It wasn’t till junior year in high school where I really took football…

Spending the last few months in this English class, I’ve realized that this was a very differently structured class than any other class that I have already previously taken. This class pushed me to step out of my comfort zone with writing, striving me to be better every day of class. From reviewing and reading my day one essay I’ve truly realized I have come a long ways away from my first day here in class, and that I have even longer ways to go getting better. I see the improvements I’ve accomplished from rereading my day one essay, going over what I’ve learned and still need to improve, and looking over past assignments the have helped me the most.…

I may even try to make my boyfriend read my book since it has helped me so much over the last eight weeks, and for years to come. During the first semester of senior year, my father lost our only means of income. At this point, I had to provide for myself when it came to personal expenses. After obtaining a job, it was hard for me to balance my schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and community service. Due to my circumstances, I lost focus on the importance of school and my grades did not reflect my fullest capabilities. Everything became stressful and the only time I had became devoted to sleeping. This also made it very difficult when it came to applying for colleges and scholarships. Since I am a first generation student, I had to learn the processes on my own with the help of my college counselor. Since my freshman year at Metro Academic and Classical High School I was afraid that the courses would be too rigorous and I would not be a successful student. This…
