Final Essay

Ever since I was young, I have been exposed to different kinds of experiences. Each of these experiences has brought a new life lesson. My mother has always encouraged me to do what I love, so during high school, in 8th grade I attended to a school called The Grier School in Altoona Pennsylvania, which specializes in dance and horse back riding. In this school I meet a variety of people that really made me grow as a person. Of all these new people that I met, the one that has left the biggest mark was my favorite dance teacher Jocelyn Hrzic. She is a person that I really admire, she was a professional dancer in New York city, after she got married she injured herself in a dance competition and had to stop dancing, so she moved back to her husband’s hometown, Altoona.
When we first arrived at school they made us audition so that the teachers could see which level was the indicated for us. My friends considered getting me involved in a more competitive class, so I auditioned for the competition team. The auditions went extremely well and I got into the advance competition team. It demanded long hours of training and really made me suffer, dancing was the only activity in the afternoons that I was able to do while in school. We started dance classes the week after. Attending classes I realized that the advance class was really too much for me, I was not used to that kind of commitment to dance. When the days passed by, I noticed that I was not really enjoying what I loved the most, so I talked to Mrs. Hrzic and I moved to the intermediate dance level. Even though I moved from advanced to intermediate she never stopped pushing me, she still yelled at me and made me do more advanced steps than my intermediate classmates were able to do. My intermediate classmates were surprised that Jocelyn made me do different steps from theirs, they all began to dislike me and say awful things behind my back.
The main lesson I learned was to

The trust between the citizens of Chicago and California and their public school system broke. Our world is built on the perception that institutions and their workers are perfect. Dubner and Levitt challenged this belief by showing that everyone is human and mistakes are made but, that does not dismiss the fact that what the school teachers did was wrong. The authors of the book helped me to understand that no one is perfect; there will always be room for improvement with everything that we do. I have taken this concept into my life by deciding to enter my self-choreographed solo from last year in upcoming competitions. I have already started to revise some of the moves to make my dance better based on the criticism I received last year from the judges. In all of our lives, there are times when we have to make a crucial decision that will change the course of our path; for the school teachers in Chicago they had to decide how they wanted to improve their student’s test scores. Multiple teachers opted for an inappropriate way however, this does not mean that they are a bad person, it means they made a…

At age of 10 I joined a dance academy named Gigi’s Academy and learned to dance Salsa, Jazz, and Rueda which is mostly danced by Latin’s. I performed a lot and made friends and really enjoyed dancing there. Everyone there was like a little family, we would have the annually year show in which we showed all the routines we practiced and it was like the most important event ever. I miss it a lot, I turned 13 and got out because I moved to homestead and my mother couldn’t drive there every day because it was too far. I had to start a new school named Somerset Academy Silver Palms. I was furious and so upset because I had to leave all my old friends behind and couldn’t believe I had to start over and wear there obnoxious uniform. Ironically It was the best two years ever that I have attend in school and that’s where I met all my friends which up till now are my closest friends. The school was a small school, about 1,000 kids in total and that’s all grades from kindergarten to your senior year. It was an extremely strict school, I got a detention for not having my tie buckled but it was on. I thought it was ridicules but that was school rules. I was there for my 7th…

When you think of someone influential in your life it’s usually someone very close to you. To a child it’s usually a superhero or one of their parents. To me this is not the case. Kate Janke, a music teacher and theatre arts instructor at the high school of Park Center, is one individual who has changed me as a person, and made me who I am today. Ms. Janke’s qualities of directing in the theatre program, teaching the subject of music, and having an open, down to earth type of personality helped shape me to be who I am today.…

I really enjoyed reading your essay and I could identify myself in many points there. I was also a very shy girl and I used to love dance! I didn't go so far as you in my dance classes, but it is very interesting the way you describe how you were able to communicate through the dance everything you couldn't through the words. you really touched me with your essay as I could picture myself as that little girl. I just think you could make you argument a little more clear for readers that don't have the same degree of identification as me and you could include also a little more censorial description to get the readers more involved about the importance of dancing in your life and what kind of sensations dancing used to bring to you. Overall,…

Ever since I was young I remember dance always being one of those things that was always there when I needed it. Everyday I looked forward to going to class and working hard, doing my best to get better everyday. I officially started dancing when I was three, however, it wasn’t until I got to the age of around 10 or 11. This was about a year after I moved to Kansas City and when I just started going to the Kansas City Ballet. The whole experience changed my point of view completely over not just dance but ballet to. I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn’t for moving to KCB.…

My Jr High choir teacher, Mrs. Bradbury, was the most challenging teacher I have ever had. She would never cut the choir a break, and never stopped pushing us to be our best; “I can’t” was not acceptable to her. I hated her with every fiber of my being, and every time she spoke all I wanted to do was sew her lips together. It wasn’t until the beginning of ninth grade when I realized she was amazing. Once I let my guard down, we instantly connected. Recognizing how much I loved to sing and becoming one of the top singers in my choir was thanks to her. I started working for hours every day on my songs, staying late after class for help, and going to voice lessons. I excelled exponentially and Mrs. Bradbury noticed it.…

This was very frustrating, for both myself and my teacher, because at the time I was in a school for early and rapid learners. My second grade teacher had tried to convince my parents to remove me from the school because I did not “belong” there, but I knew I did. After all I had passed the test, just as every other student, and was awarded acceptance into the school. To this day I am still very thankful that my parents did not remove me from the school, because it helped me grow into the person that I am now. Being in a very competitive environment, academically speaking was very…

An experience that has significantly transformed me into the person I am today are the beginning years of my cheer “career.” The first three years were the most difficult that i have faced throughout the nine years I have cheered in total. I was not the most athletic, skinniest, or skillful cheerleader there can be. Also since i was new to the cheer world, as all cheerleaders call it, I didn't have as many friends. As time went on I slowly started to get the hang of things and what went on with this new sport. My coaches always punished me in everything I did. I had to prove myself to everyone that I can be just like them and nothing less.…

Three years ago, I came into a world full of dreams, but these dreams can take you down if you don’t pay good attention. I am the first born in my family. Before I came here, I was so afraid to come to a new country, which I didn’t know any thing about. I was somehow confused, and the biggest fear that I had was about adapting to a new culture. After some days of being at home, I was taken to school where I met so many student, teachers, and other nonteaching staff. Although I didn’t know anyone, all the people I met welcomed me, and I really appreciated the welcome. The school counselor called one of the students and told him to show me my classes. Then the boy took me to my new class, and when I entered, all eyes were on…

Before I got out the car so my parents could find parking I realised that I need to change my shoes so I did it really quickly and ran inside I found the two of them and said hi but they just stared at me like I was a foreign object “So rude.” I thought to myself and continued to the makeup room. After I finished I went into the dressing rooms and it was full of high schoolers I was only in 6th grade! I felt so out of place so I just sat in the corner and tried to remember my acrobatic dance. Performance number 11 is up I heard one of the older girls call. I was number 13 so I walked out of the room and waited in a line for number 11 to finish. My stomach kept doing all these twists and turns and It felt like no oxygen was running to my brain so I sat down and closed my eyes. That made me feel a lot worse because once on stage I forgot my dance I’ve practiced it over a hundred times how can I forget it now. I decided to watch the other girls and as soon as they did a cartwheel I did a cartwheel then I went down in a split and the crowd oohed and ahhed. I walked into the middle for my solo a trick and I saw them standing there with smirks on their faces because they weren’t supportive of me and they thought that there was no way in the world that I could do a…

At the age of fourteen, I decided to audition for La-Guardia High School of the Performing Arts. I will never forget the lady at the front desk and how her eyes pierced through me like a fierce beast studying her prey. As I reflected on mothers’ encouraging words, the beast rudely yelled out my number and said, “Are you going in there dressed like that? Good luck, you’ll need it!" She then directed me to the auditorium where, by God’s amazing grace, I found favor with the judges and made it into La-Guardia High School of the Performing Arts. That victory was short lived due to my mother’s decision to relocate us for safety reasons.…
