4-Colonialism illustrates the start of when Europeans initiated controlling the Native culture, erasing many parts of it.
Occurring from when Christopher Columbus discovered North America and called Natives, “Indians.”
Then comes residential schools where children were separated from their families, losing their identity during that process.
“Kill the Indian in him, not the man,” this is the central motive for how the Natives are supposed to be.

Ultimately, children did not have any extensive contact with family members.
Some things that they had to deal with was them being abused, tortured and many other things. The author, King states how he was sent to a Catholic boarding school at the age of fifteen.
However, it was not exactly like residential school because he is never abused or sexually abused.
While all King wanted to do was come home from the Catholic school, he saw hope in his mother’s eyes that this might help him due to his father not being a part in his life, nor any other male figures.
8-In junior year, he returned back to Roseville and public high school and wanted to keep the Catholic boarding school at the back of his mind.
However, he was unable to do that due to Residential schools started to pop up, quickly.
Later, in 1850, they started to become strict and attendance was compulsory for all children from the ages of six to fifteen, unable to opt out and by non-compliance by parents was punishable by prison terms. (King, 113).
