Having cultural competence is something that is gained through experience with other cultures other than your own. This means understanding that different cultures do in fact exist and one must be aware that we are all different with different cultures. For me a time that I connected with a different culture in a work environment was a few years back when I was working as a driver and my assistant was an African man, very nice man, who was new to the job and I had to train him by showing him how things get done properly. When we would communicate it wasn’t that bad since he had studied the English language back home he only had some words that he couldn’t pronounce, so I would help him.…

A leader needs cultural intelligence to interrupt mannerisms and responses from a person with a different cultural background. I worked with two individuals both from the Philippines. The higher ranking person was younger than the other; it caused tension in the office because in their culture the elder is always respected, so to take orders from someone younger was difficult. I worked out for the best; we were able to see the underlining problems and able to move…

Living in the United States it is inevitable working or interacting with people that are different than us. In school, at work everywhere you go you interact with people that are different than you. My most recent experience can be at work, with both children and teachers. I come from a Hispanic background, but the teachers at the company are from a different race than me; one is African American and the other is Indian. Interacting with them everyday is special because I end up learning something about their culture every time. Been open minded about people, culture, and believes is what makes everyday especial. They bring cultural food for lunch and share with everyone, trying new foods is amazing because you learn a bit about their country by the food.…

Good communication is essential due to language barriers, and its effect on work performance. Some cultures do not take criticism well, while others may look for suggestions. Team building and education are important because many cultures prefer to work alone and others prefer cooperative assignments (Kirkman, Shapiro, 2001). Cross cultural team building will help accommodate all these preferences and help employees respect each other’s differences. Time and calendar mean different things to different cultures and ethnicities. An effort must be made to set up a companywide expectation that incorporates allowable time for holidays and religious preferences (Kirkman, Shapiro,…
