The US Army for almost ten years now has stretched, bent and broken some of their own recruiting rules in order to keep up with the demands of the wars. Now that the wars are coming to an end, they have started to realize that all the rules that have been stretched, bent and broken really need to be in place. First I will summarize the recruitment of the U.S. Army and then I will discuss what ethical research practices should be avoided in this project. For our military to complete its mission of defending our country effectively, it is obvious that more personnel are needed. An unbalanced force brings upon a challenge to effectively develop our Soldiers. It not only impedes our forces, but in turn it decreases our effectiveness and capability to employ when and where the nation needs forces and succeeding in the mission. The focal point of my paper will be on the changes in the United States (US) armed forces over the last century. I chose to compare the Buffalo Soldiers, who existed from 1867-1896, and their experiences with the current state of the US armed forces. I was drawn to author, ZZ Packer’s “Buffalo Soldiers” because of my experience in the US armed services and, as I read the book it became clear that the US armed services today is very different from what it was at the time when the Buffalo Soldiers existed. In the modern military, emphasis is shifting from combat arms roles dominating the armed forces to roles that may be considered more so support, chief among which is cybersecurity. Cybersecurity units have been having trouble recruiting people who meet the qualifications to serve as a cyber operations officer, but also meet physical standards set by the military.
