boredom, lack of communication and overstimulation. Psychological issues e.g. depression, frustration and grief and finally cognitive factors e.g. brain injuries, poor judgement and memory loss. Challenging behaviour has been defined as “any behaviour or lack of behaviour of such intensity, frequency and/or duration that has the potential to cause distress or harm to clients, carers and staff or one which creates feelings of discomfort, powerlessness, frustration, fear or anxiety. It is also any behaviour, which delays or limits access to ordinary community facilities and it is outside socially acceptable norms” Erick Emerson (1995). To facilitate and support individuals who face these issues we look at the concept of Positive behaviour support ( PBS). This is a behaviour management system and a person centred framework. The foundation of PBS is used to understand why an individual displays challenging behaviour, and to address the triggers associated with it. To plan and implement ways of supporting the individual be that of a child or adult and to enhance and improve the life of the individual caregivers, family and other people around
