Professional development This chapter will help you to develop greater self-awareness in relation to your professional role and responsibilities. It will help you to understand the principles and importance of professional development and reflective practice in identifying and prioritising development goals and how to plan to meet these in order to improve your performance.
As a leader and manager, you are responsible for ensuring that workplace practices are up to date and meet current regulations, standards and frameworks for best practice. Using processes to manage both your own development and those of others is an effective means of promoting professional practice and leading by example.

These will also help you to identify any gaps in your knowledge and skills, and guide you in prioritising your professional development.
in your evaluation, you will find it easier if you can identify real work examples that demonstrate what you know and can do. If you struggle to identify examples then this is likely to indicate an area for development.
Note: as of 1st August 2012 the GSCC function has been moved to the Health and
Care Professions Council (HCPC), but the legacy codes and documentation still stand until newer implementations arise.
There are a number of standards and benchmarks used in health and social care.
These include:
■ codes of practice, e.g. General Social Care
Council (GSCC) Code of Practice
■ regulations, such as the Data Protection Act
(1998)
■ essential standards, e.g. the Care Quality
Commission Essential Standards of
