Here are many different methods for continuing professional development; here are a select few below.
Case Study Method
This gives a learner a case where they have to become the role of a certain person and make decisions themselves. This good as it gets the person to think about new situations they wouldn’t normally come across. This is similar to when I was working as a sales assistant in Sainsbury’s for my work experience with school, it helped me realise new challenges in the work place.
This will help me in my graphic design career because I can put myself in the position of a graphic designer working for an agency. I will be forced to think on my feet and come up with decisions about what to do as a graphic designer, so for example if a client is asking for a third round of revisions and your policy states that you only do two rounds of revision and you charge extra …show more content…
rates for a third round of revisions. This would need to be communicated clearly in the contract and the case study method of training will help me understand this and make the contract clear in future cases.
Consultation
A consultation is frequent discussions on progress of yourself and work manager or team leader.
Having short but often discussions helps employees know what they need to do and what they are aiming for, for themselves. This is like me and my tutor back in secondary school where we had frequent discussions in form time about how I am doing, what my targets are for the term etc.
This would help me in my career as a graphic designer because frequent conversations with my team leader will provide me with guidance and tips. These tips will help me expand my knowledge base of graphic design and can provide me with valuable processes that will make me more efficient in my job and everyday tasks.
Coaching
A coach is someone that takes a trainee through a process of learning and develops their skills to achieve targets in the future. A coach checks up regularly on performance and monitors how well they are doing on a regular basis. This is similar to college where I have a tutor that checks up on me and how I am getting on with the
course.
Coaching me whilst I am on my graphic design job will be incredibly valuable to me as it allows me to continuously learn about my field and improve upon my current skill set. This will inevitably lead on to greater job opportunities and a larger pay packet. The coaching would normally be provided and paid for by the company which is an incentive for me to work with a company that plans to coach me.
Communities of Practice
Communities of Practice are groups of people that share the same interest with one another. They share tips, try new things and experiment in their area of practice. For me this would be Graphic Design and online there are a number of forums where the community can engage, learn and share tips with one another all about graphic design. This helps me develop skills in for my career path of graphic design.
The sheer numbers of online communities for graphic design are enormous and it’s just finding the right ones that have valuable information that will help me improve my skill set. Getting involved in community sites online and offline is essential as it allows me to network with other like minded graphic designers. This will help me talk and express my feelings about the job; what I find hard, what software to use, what agencies to sign with etc. Also, being able to network could potentially bring in new clients for me to work with.
Lesson Study
Lesson study is one of the more obvious ways of professional development, when a teacher is teaching a specific subject and a group of students are gaining from that. For me this is the same as college, the teachers are teaching me business and I am developing skills for my future career path to have access to university in the coming year.
In my future career of graphic design I can do lesson study online with web sites that require a monthly subscription. These sites host the large names in graphic design that walk you through, step by step, exactly how to use software to achieve results. Using these lessons and studying them will help me learn valuable skills to improve my skill set.
Mentoring
Mentoring is similar to lesson study but is done outside of lessons or work and is normally one to one. A mentor teaches a subject or a variety of subjects and aims to progress the students career level by giving them skills for the workplace to make them more employable or grades so they can gain access to higher education. This is like my tutor at college but that is done within college, he checks up on my progress and helps me out.
This will help me in my future career of graphic design as the mentor can teach me skills and increase my confidence in graphic design. This is important to me as confidence is key in capturing business opportunities and creating sales.
