When faced with the wealthy suitors who’d been courting his wife for decades, Odysseus found himself being met with constant ridicule rather than civil discussions. Though hospitality was granted to him by Eumaeus, the swineherd, and Thelemacus, Odysseus’s son, the rest of the community was reluctant to give him an ounce of empathy, as they distinguished him purely on the basis of his low-class appearance. The suitors were quick to formulate predisposed opinions about this “old beggar,” never failing to treat him as ignoble, and they quickly outcasted him due to his perceived disadvantages; in this case, those disadvantages were his age and low economic status. Nonetheless, after observing the despicable ways of the suitors, Odysseus took the opportunity of Penelope’s matrimonious archery contest to confront them. Predictably, this confrontation wasn’t looked upon favorably by the suitors.…

Bidding Telemachus a farewell for his journey to Sparta, Penelope walked back to her room, her face maintained an expression of strength and poise as she passed her maids, her skirt lightly grazing the ground. Each one had paused their impending tasks, staring at her intently, trying to look past her veil as to find a trace of emotion within her. As Penelope turned the corner, she spun around abruptly, catching all of the maids gawking at her. She continued on into her room and shut the door noisily. She slumped against the heavy wooden doors, defeated, and began sobbing tirelessly. With young Telemachus and the great Odysseus both gone, Icarius’ daughter Penelope, wary and reserved, found a void in her life that could not be filled. Her nights…

In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus exemplifies the aristocratic man idealized in Nietzsche’s On the Genealogy of Morality. Nietzsche depicts the aristocratic man, the noble man, very distinctly with qualities of mentality and behavior. An aristocratic man embraces his sovereignty, relishes in life, and refuses to feel guilt. Odysseus lives what Nietzsche describes as a good and noble life, a life characterized by action and war. Odysseus not only is King of Ithaca, but also the epitome of the aristocratic man in attitude and action.…

A critical event in anyone’s life can change people way of thinking and/or reacting, like Odysseus. In the book the Odyssey, we learned the story about the great warrior Odysseus, who was trying to go home, from a long and brutal war against Troy. He was a great fighter who demonstrated his strength and power in the Trojan War, but his prideful, hubris, and impulsive personality, made his journey back home be extremely long. Throughout most of the story of the Odyssey, there are many examples that demonstrate how Odysseus reacts to certain situation, and how his personality and the way he is, gets him in a lot of trouble. His whole voyage allowed Odysseus to see the outcomes of his reactions, which help him change from being an impulsive person, to a person that strategically plans his actions and waits for the right time to act upon them. The difficult, tedious, and long journey that Odysseus went through just to get to his home town in Ithika, changed him, for the better.…

This book by Machiavelli instructs the readers of the guidelines of how a “Prince” should lead and overcome adversaries or conflicts the Machiavellian way. It relates to my topic of “Power and Leadership” because it contains ideologies of how leaders should react or demonstrate power when threatened by internal or foreign forces. This text also discusses different circumstances that could affect a king’s superiority in his kingdom. The effect of the political structure of a king’s kingdom is an example of the topics that are discussed in this text that could be applied to the circumstance of Odysseus kingdom, Ithaca. This text will be the basis of my judgement on the rights and wrongs of Odysseus’ leadership. It will also be the basis of my evaluation on what Odysseus should have and should have not done on different situations throughout his travel.…

Telemachus is often overshadowed by Odysseus many heroic deeds and conquests; while Telemachus attempts to be just like his father, he never earns the full respect of those close to him and is never seen as a true figure of power or authority in others eyes or even in his own. In Book 2, the suitors mock Telemachus for his weakness and indecisiveness. Eurymachus writes off the omen of the fighting eagles, voicing his belief that Telemachus (whom he refers to as the boy [l. 212]) cannot follow through with his tiresome threats because he lacks the power to challenge the suitors. Later, Leocritus states that despite encouragement from the elders, Telemachus will never make the journey to uncover information about Odysseus; like Eurymachus, Leocritus doubts that Telemachus will act on his words. When Athena appears to Telemachus, she expresses her faith in him, which is apparently due only to the fact that he is Odysseus son. Possibly foreshadowing Telemachus ultimate failure to emulate his father, she says, Few sons are the equals of their fathers; most fall short. [l. 309-310]Consistent comparison to Odysseus leads even Telemachus to doubt his abilities.…
