Introduction:

The woman still would not let go of the little girl. By this point, the cashier had noticed that something was going on. He turned to the woman and shouted, “Hey, what do you think are you doing?” Noticing that they were drawing a crowd, the couple let go of the daughter. They turned and walked out of the store without even buying their items.

As the couple walked away, Sammy noticed that a different stranger had been watching her. Before she thought about it, the cashier began to talk to Sammy. His name was Cameron. He asked her to describe what happened and how the couple had acted. As Sammy relayed the story, Cameron realized that it was a possible abduction attempt. There had been warnings on the news about kidnappings and human trafficking. It sounded like the strange couple could have been a part of that ring.

After listening to her story, the cashier told Sammy to call the police. He wanted to do more, but he had to finish his shift and was the only cashier at the grocery store. Overwhelmed, Sammy nodded vacantly.

It all happened on a warm sunny saturday morning in “Where are you going. Where have you been’’ by Joyce Carry Oates. It started with an unfamiliar car bouncing along Connie's long drive way. When she first heard the car she rushed to the window excitedly, frantically fixing her hair. Making sure she looked good, seemed to be an insecure habit for Connie. She saw an uninvited boyish looking man who was situated in the car parked now in her driveway. There was a tension of unease about the boyish man, he acted if he was supposed to be at Connie's house, as if she has told him to come. She should have taken him being there uninvited more seriously, by locking the door or even calling the police. Connie was too caught up with herself to realize…

Friend looked up at her from his car and said, “Gonna get you baby” (Introduction to Literature 485). She thought nothing of the event and just kept going on with her friend. A short time later in the story, while Connie was sun bathing and listening to music, Friend shows up at her house. The first thing to shoot through Connie’s brain was her wondering how bad she looked. There is something wrong with that picture, that there was a stranger at her door that literally told her that he is going to get her. Most normal teens would be afraid of this kind of behavior and probably report it, not Connie. Friend starts talking about how he wants her to come with him, and bribing her with the music that he knew she loved. With his smooth talk, Friend tells her “I know my Connie”…”I took a special interest in you, such a pretty young girl, and found out all about you like I know your parents and sister are gone somewheres, and I know who you were with last night, and your best girl friend’s name is Betty. Right?” (Introduction to Literature 488). Friend goes on in detail about all of the things he knows about Connie and as he does this, Connie starts to panic. The harsh realization that she is only fifteen and that she isn’t really experienced or old enough to know what to do in this kind of situation. She then went inside to be protected by the screen door.…

She discussed how Sean was “the coolest” and that he would give the kids prizes. I began asking what the prizes were for.
