“Most of us have some need for self-control and also the need to control others at times” (Corey & Corey 2007). Control over our lives is essential to preparation and scheduling, self-control is fundamental for us to function effectively. I’ve encountered one person in my life that I can truthfully say has impacted my life greatly. I worked with this individual for only a short time, but she was the only person to really reach out and make me feel valued and appreciated. I include activities and books about different cultures and different home environments. I provide activities that they are capable of completing and materials that are age appropriate, I encourage children to share stories about their family. I ask them about their family, culture, and gender, I respect and recognize their emotional and physical needs. I help them with activities if my help is needed. I show empathy toward their feelings. I encourage them to talk about their feelings, and how they are different, and give them appropriate ways to express them. Whether they are sad, mad, or stressed. I comfort them. Internal social control is the process of internalizing the norms of society and accepting them as valid (Chriss, 2007). This form of social control operates through the process of socialization. Individuals learn and adopt the norms of the society within the society. There are factors (or agents) that help in this process. One is the family. As the child grows he or she is introduced to other agents such as school, friends and of course the media. When the individual accepts the norms determined by the society in which they live as valid, the person will feels guilty if they engage in behavior outside of these norms that society deems wrong.…

What I found interesting was that the 40-year-old was the only person with an internal locus of control. Is that because of age? Personality? After research it seems as though locus of control becomes more internal with age, “The Youth in Transition project, a longitudinal study, found that in adolescent boys, locus of control became more internal from tenth grade to one-year post-high school, with the greatest change occurring between the tenth and eleventh grades had similar results.” (Chubb, Fertman, & Ross, 1997). Locus of control can also be affected by self-esteem; the self-esteem of a high school student is much lower than that of someone middle aged so, the high school student needs approval of the outside world to feel good about themselves.
