As a nursery assistant my role within the setting is to provide a safe and secure enviroment for all children. By doing this i help to complete a health and safety checklist every morning to ensure all equipment and facilities are clean and safe in order for children to access and use independantly. I also make sure that all activities are safe for the children to be invold in and make sure that the activites are suitable for all age groups. It is important that the children are looked after emotinally and phyiscally and that they feel safe and happy. All the staff are checked to make sure they have there first aid and some sort of training or qualification in childcare before they start. Any reports or concerns will be notified to my manager and will be written out for further investigation or for the childs records. One of those expectations is reporting abuse or suspected abuse. I asked my field work supervisor if she has ever had to file a report because I wanted to hear first-hand how the process works. Luckily, she has only had to contact child protective services a couple of times. I was grateful to hear about her experiences because she talked about aspects the training does not mention. For example, the angry backlash from parents or guardians after a report is made. The reporter’s confidentiality is protected, but sometimes it is easy for the parent or guardian to connect the dots and realize who made the report of abuse. The training also does not cover the emotions that may come up for the person making the report. Discovering a child is being abused is difficult and heart breaking to say the least, but it can be even more difficult if the abuse is taking place in home that one placed the child in or is case managing. The three year olds gross motor skills, which are related to active play, consisted of throwing a large ball and running at a long distance to catch it, jumping up and down, climbing up the slide and jungle gym with ease and quickly. There was constant movement with the child in all the 45 minutes that I observed her and her level of activity was very high. It was hard to catch her at moment of stillness, and even then he would be fidgeting under the table or in her seat. Her fine motor skill included, using crayons and coloring a picture, and even though most of it was scribbles(which at this age they tend to do), she was able to remain inside the coloring picture outline. I began to take interest in the Child Protective Service procedures because of all the neglect I have seen in the news, mainly the Jaycee Dugard ordeal. Another recent Child Protective Service blunder was the case of Ariel Castro, who abducted three girls ten years ago. It’s baffling to me that Child Protective Service case workers can visit a residence and not completely investigate the situation. There have been many circumstances where this has happened, and come to find out, children were being held captive in the home and not discovered until much later. Also, many children have unjustly been removed from homes and placed in far worse environments. Child Protective Services has veered away from helping families to corruption and harming families. These mistakes have also led to the use of children to make money and an overall failure to protect our children. Many changes need to be made to make Child Protective Services a reliable, lawful and respectable organization again.…

In the work setting it is essential to be able to communicate effectively with many different people on a daily basis. It is important to establish good relationships with a range of different people so that you can plan for and meet their needs. Personally in my setting I am expected to communicate with teachers, children, classroom assistants, lunch supervisors, clerical staff, care takers and parents. Different forms of communication may be required to do so and good communication skills are essential. It is impossible to develop good relationships without good communication. In my work setting the first people I would communicate with is the teacher of the class I am with. From them I learn the plans for the day, what child r children may need extra help, the goals we are working towards and any changes to the class, the children and the plans in place. After listing to the teacher I would then ask any relevant questions and ensure I am ready for the day ahead. Good communication is essential at this point as it helps build respectful relationships, and means that we work together in a team for the good of the children. Poor communication here would lead to either myself or the teacher being unsure of or tasks for the day, which may then lead to confusion for the children. Poor communication may then lead to feelings of stress and resentment as we may feel that we are being ignored or unappreciated. When we are communicating with our managers and peers, we need to ensure that we are communicating appropriately and respectfully. Firstly we need to ensure that were we are communicating is at an appropriate time and location, and that we speak to each other in an appropriate tone of voice. I recognise this assessment is ongoing and involved weekly observations to identify progress and monitor the services. I made a record of each visit and reported any concerns to my manager (SW one, Walker 2011). I noted at times my intervention did not improve the situation as it took some time for the services to be allocated. Upon reflection, I could have been more open with N at the start about my concerns as her feedback reflected an inconsistency in my approach. Kemshall (2002) argues that social work is predominantly concerned with handling and assessing risk, as opposed to focusing on social need and justice. It should be highlighted that N may have feel structurally oppressed due to her mental health and not being appreciated for the challenges she is facing (Thompson 2007). I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old. The principle gave me a warm greeting and took me to the class and introduced me to the teachers and the children. Everyone there made me feel welcomed. I chose a place where I can sit, observe and write my note as well as to be away from children's sight. In the classroom there were five boys, two girls, and two teachers Ms. Nadia and Ms. Emma. The classroom itself was large and spacious. The classroom is very appropriate for children this age and it has many interesting areas such as a blocks and art area, and children taped some of their previous work in the art area. The color of the class is bright and has interesting posters like calendars with the name of children’s birthdays. Also. During my eighth observation at the Child Study Center (CSC), I walked in and went straight to the four year old room. Once I got in the room I notice that all the students were on the carpet listening to a College student reading them a story. I sat back and watched and listen to the students and how they were interacting with someone different reading to them at whole group. After the story the college student had an activity for the students to do that went with the story that she had read. The activity that the students had to do was to make a puppet that sat on a stick that they could use and play with. At my church, Fallbrook Church, I work at their daycare as a volunteer day care assistant. I take care of children as young as 0 months old to 4 years old. I prepare their meals, sanitize their toys and the tables and entertain the children with songs and games. According to Piaget Cognitive Development Theory (Berk, 2003, p.133), this child is in the preoperational stage (2-7 years), and he behaves normally. When the father left he was upset. His mother asked him to sit still in one of the chairs. He was lying in an arm chair, moving his legs up and down. Then he put his feet on the armrest of the chair next to him, where his sister was sitting. He repeated this behavior several times in attempt to hit his sister. That made his mother tell him off. However, he still didn't respond. Then he put his head on the seat and lifted his feet on the back of the chair, and he started to stomp his feet. He then tried to get down to the floor head first. His mother told him to stop, but he didn't, so she sent one of his elder sisters to pick him up and put him in the chair in the right way. He repeated the same behavior and again his mother failed to make him stop, so she sent the other sister to pick him up. This time his mother warned him not to repeat that, so he stayed in his chair for a few minutes without doing anything. As we noticed he didn't respond to her in the first time, but later when she warned him he responded by behaving for a few minutes only. Children at this age cannot stay for a long time without moving or doing something. Parents and/or care givers can keep them busy by telling stories, playing with them or maybe by providing any kind of toys to assure that they are not bored.
