Child Development Milestones
Age | Physical Development | Communication and intellectual development | Social, emotional and behavioural development. | 0-3 months | * Feeding 5-8 times a day * Sleeping 20 hours a day * Makes basic distinctions within the first month in the sensory capacities; vision, hearing, smelling, tasting, touch, temperature and pain. * Visual exploration and colour perception develops further into months 2 and 3. * Muscle control is developed; control of eye movement, kicking legs and the ability to lift head whilst on stomach. | * Initial form of communication is crying; different form of crying for their needs. * Oral exploration is developed into months 2-3 with sounds; cries, coo’s, grunts. * There is no perception they are a separate person. * Begin to make eye contact. | * Initially unaware of their surroundings; they do not know what is happening to them, completely helpless and reliant on the mother. * Cry when they are hungry or tired. * They are not yet able to think but can feel; may be calm when you are calm or happy when they are being fed. * Begin to smile by 5-7 weeks and by 3 months are able to laugh | 4-6 months | * Become more aware of their own body; it belongs to them. * Begin to grasp and feel; grab for objects in front of them and are able to hold them for brief periods, often bringing to their mouth. * They begin to roll over and wave arms and legs when on tummy. * Feedings are halved with 3-5 a day. * Can support own weight on feet and sit up when being held. | * They respond to voices; turn head to person talking and take turns when ‘talking’. * Eye contact is more focused and they are aware of things around them; enjoy looking at people and bright objects. * Sounds develop; start to ‘babble’ and can make majority of vowel sounds. | * Are more aware of mother and people around, responding to their emotions; may look worried if you are
