Food prices can rise and fall depending on reasons such as agriculture policy, tax policy, and subsidy policies all set forth by the government. Lower cost, but less healthy foods are often a choice for lower income families. The cost for fresh fruits and vegetables has increased over time which makes the healthier choices less accessible. Prices tend to play a large part in consumer choices because people tend to get what they can afford and this has an effect on what our youth is consuming. “Some analyses suggest that energy-dense foods composed of refined grains, added sugars, or fats remain the lowest- cost option to the consumer” (White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity Report, pg. 55). Product formulation also contributes to childhood obesity. “Consumer demand plays an essential role in the range of foods available, yet decisions that the food and agriculture industries make in responding to these demands determine what is on our shelves” (White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity Report, pg. 59).
