Chronic diseases are the dominating cause of disability and death. (Cekici, Kantarci, Hasturk, & Van Dyke, 2017). Chronic Periodontitis is among the many chronic diseases our society faces today. Oral care is often something taken for granted, habits are formed which don’t always include a thorough oral care plan, it is easy to forget how good oral hygiene can be life saving. Throughout this paper we will be discussing health promotion related to Chronic Periodontitis, which is a prevalent disease among adults and older adults. Health promotion is the act of implementing interventions to prevent or decrease symptoms of a disease. It enables an individual to take control of their health and well being, it moves further beyond the focus on an individual behaviour and acts as an umbrella covering wide range of environmental and social interventions.("Health promotion", 2017) Health promotion is vital to raising awareness of diseases and allowing individuals to improve their health without the constant need for health care services. Health Promotion for Chronic Periodontitis Dental plaque control is the most important aspect to preventing or reducing the symptoms of chronic periodontitis. There are two levels of care for plaque control, one being what an individual can for themselves in regard to plaque control and the other being what hygienists and dentists can do to eradicate plaque retention factors, and give advice to individuals on proper oral care at home. ("Dental Health Foundation", 2017) Plaque is controlled by thorough teeth brushing, plaque removal aids such as plaque disclosing agents and mouthwash, flossing and regular dentist visits.("Dental Health Foundation", 2017) Tooth brushing is the most important aspect to plaque control. It is imperative that the individual learn a daily routine and demonstrate correct tooth brushing technique. Short gentle horizontal movements with a toothbrush that is soft to medium texture will effectively remove plaque on the tooth and around the gum margins. Plaque disclosing agents should be used after tooth brushing, they reveal plaque that may have been missed during tooth brushing.("Dental Health Foundation", 2017) Flossing can be an invaluable tool to plaque removal if done properly.
