INTRODUCTION
In this essay I am going to be talking about the City Of Leeds and how it has changed over the past 100 years. I have chosen to investigate the City Of Leeds because I feel it has prospered over the years, and I would be interested to explore the factors which have contributed to it becoming one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom. Leeds started off as a small village with a population of around 200 (in 1086). The town was founded by the Lord of the Manor, Maurice De Gant, in 1207. Around this time Leeds was a small and insignificant town which consisted of butchers, bakers, carpenters and blacksmiths, yet the main industry was the production of wool, (Localhistories, 2013). The factors I will be concentrating on to show the trend of change in Leeds are the Economy, Immigration, Population and Retail. I have chosen these four factors as I feel these have shape shifted Leeds to what it has become today.
DEVELOPMENT
POPULATION
By the start of the 20th century Leeds had reached a population of around 178,000 and from there onwards it continued to grow promptly making it the 4th largest city in England. Events such as the First World War included regiments being made up of men from certain towns. Therefore if one regiment suffered substantial losses, this would result in a town/cities male population to decrease significantly. Leeds was a city which was affected by this system. However during the Second World War, this changed and regiments were made up of men from different cities/towns.
ECONOMY
The University Of Leeds was built at the beginning of the 20th century at which the economy started to change. During this era there had been a huge development in the medical establishment, places such as Leeds General Infirmary and St James’ Hospital were developed. In Leeds after World War 2 there had been a mass drop of industrial income thus leading to a decline in the industries, but
