Civil War DBQ Essay
“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” This statement that created by President Abraham Lincoln demonstrates the necessity of the Civil War. If the United States were to remain divided, the strength of these two nations would be degraded and allow the continuation of an immoral practice; slavery. “Politicians, business leaders, newspaper editors, and others desperately sought a last-ditch compromise that would keep other states from following South Carolina...no compromise on Earth could reverse the election of Abraham Lincoln and the Southern fears of a “Black Republican” administration” (Roberts 50). As various groups split within the nation, the …show more content…
As a result of two documents, the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth amendment, President Lincoln was able to achieve this feat. “Lincoln noted the morality of his decision, writing that he believed emancipation to be "an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon military necessity." The document had immediate practical benefits as well, as the British government backed away from recognizing the Confederacy soon after Lincoln issued the Proclamation” (Behrend). Clearly, freeing the slaves through the Emancipation Proclamation was the best course of action. Due to the bold declaration, Lincoln was made a statement of the Union’s power which deterred a powerful foreign entity from joining the war. Not only does the Constitution, which is the highest law in the land, justify Lincoln’s action, they were morally called for. If not for the Civil War, our nation would have continued to support a dark practice which enslaved fellow human beings. Along with achieving the goal of freeing slaves, the Emancipation prevented Britain from joining the war. This would have tipped the scale in favor of the South and could even jeopardize the nation’s freedom. The Thirteenth Amendment was also necessary to free all slaves. “This amendment abolished slavery and gave Congress the power to pass laws to enforce the abolition...The end of the Civil War and the

The controversy surrounding slavery between the North and South was crucial. The North did not want to have slavery because it was evil and cruel, but the South wanted slavery because it was their way of making money in the economy. Northerners had wanted to get rid of slavery, but Southern states seceded, leading to the Civil War. During the Civil War, in late January of 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in the Confederate states. Freedmen were allowed to join the Union army as shown in Document 5. After the Union won the Civil War, the 13th amendment was issued, abolishing slavery in…

It took President Lincoln several years to abolish slavery. Slavery was very popular in the southern states ,because slavery was one of the primary sources of their economy. The slaves were also the primary source of labor in the southern states. They worked the fields on the plantations. When Lincoln found out the southern states were winning the war, he had to call for a “game changer” on the southern states. Lincoln’s “game changer” was to abolish the primary source of the south’s economy, slavery. Lincoln worked countless hours of forming the Emancipation Proclamation, which free all slaves in the south excluding the bordering states from north to south. From this slavery was over, and almost every black was free on January 1, 1863.…

There is much controversy and uncertainty about the reasons of why the Civil War started, and why it went on for so long. The Civil War is unusual not only in American History, but in world history as well because of the intensity and carnage of it. Men were taking up arms against their neighbors, fathers, sons, brothers, and friends to meet on the field of battle with only one mission: to kill one another. James McPherson wondered this, so he researched over 25,000 uncensored letters to friends and family, and almost 250 private diaries from soldiers fighting for the Confederacy and soldiers fighting for the Union. He then took what he learned and wrote the book For Cause and Comrades, and found…

If asked, most people would blame as the cause of the civil war the issue of slavery. This is understandable; many people in the U.S. at the time were against slavery, going to far as to help runaway slaves escape to the free north. But, while slavery at face value was a major factor, international politics and economics played a major role. Several factors, including the election of Lincoln, the raid on Harper 's Ferry, the Dred Scott decision, and, most importantly, the fugitive slave law, contributed to the growing rift between the North and South and, eventually, the Civil War.…

Just before the civil war was over, Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. This freed all slaves in the states that seceded from the union. I think it also caught the hearts of many rebels, helping them see why what they were doing was wrong. That was a huge factor in winning the war for the north.…

This week’s topic should defiantly bring difference in opinions about a turning point of the Civil War. I am going to throw out there that in my opinion a turning point in the war was not reliant on one battle, one executive order, or one weapon evolution, but a combination these complimenting each other lead to a turning point movement for a lack of a better term. I suggest that Gettysburg is a major event in the Union’s favor, but if left standing alone without events such as the victory at Antietam and Vicksburg it would have just been a major victory for the Union. I also believe that the Union did create a weapon evolution with their rifles with the introduction of the Spencer Repeating Rifle. Not one battle can be attributed to the defeat of the Confederacy, but a series of victories and evolutions that undermined the Confederacy’s ability to wage war and replace its most valuable assets, men.…

During the Civil War, President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Since this action was implemented during the war, slaves were not entirely set free. “Because the proclamation did not apply to any of the loyal slave states..., military victory was the only way for these ideas to take effect throughout the nation.” (Bowles, 2011) Once the South surrendered at Appomattox in 1865, the President was able to fully invoke freedom from slavery. The Civil War was fought for several reasons, but one of the most important was the South’s fight to preserve their slave based economy. Just as the war had ended, a whole new battleground was about to be embarked upon.…

Throughout the civil war period Lincoln came to a realization that he should not just abolish slavery for the interest to protect the union but more so because of the moral issue of slavery. At first, his goal was strictly to preserve the union in any way possible and at the time, states in the South were choosing to succeed and emancipation was the way he believed would stop that. Lincoln believed that succession was not the states rights but slavery was. 1 This was one of the reasons Lincoln did not feel it was his right to take away slavery from slave states. Lincoln stated, “If I could save the union without freeing any slave, I would do it, and if I could save it with freeing all the slaves I would do it.” 2 This proves that his main goal in the beginning was purely to save the union. As the war continued, Lincoln then issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which promised freedom to slaves in the areas that continued to be in rebellion on…
