Civil War DBQ
Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, once said, “The best way to destroy an enemy is to make him a friend.” This quote, said by Abraham Lincoln, means that the best way to win a war, is to ally with the enemy and then attack them. The tensions were high between the North and South and they were about to go to war. The Civil War was caused by societal tensions about slavery, and the results of tariffs and slavery on the economy. There were many things that caused the Civil War, and one of the causes of the Civil War was societal tensions over slavery. One reason the Civil War was caused by the societal tensions about slavery. There were two documents that fit this category and those were Document G by Frederick Douglass and Document L by Roger …show more content…
Document B and Document C were the documents that had fit in this category. Document B was a page with graphs that showed the resources of the Union and Confederacy. Evidently, this showed that the North had plenty more of an machine based industry than the South and the South had many more farms and slaves. This also showed that the North had larger population than the South, and very little slaves only in the border states. The North had not nearly as many cotton factories and that was their intentions to abolish slavery which resulted in more tension between the North and the South. This will also affect why the Civil War started. Accordingly to the graphs that showed on Document C, the resources of the Union and Confederacy, Hinton Helper wrote about how the South should change. Clearly, this shows that Helper thinks that the South should make more cotton factories like the North and become a self sufficient region. Also Hinton says that the South is dependent on the North to build most of their railroads, canals, and other public improvements. This caused the Civil War, because if the South did make all the improvements of being a self-sufficient country, the North would be mad that they have competition and the South has the source of cotton from the slaves. This would cause tension between the North and South. Many people were killed in the Civil War and many people will not forget about this ever. The Civil War was caused by economic outcomes of tariffs and slavery and slavery tensions on the society. The Civil War could have begun for many reasons, but it is hard to pinpoint one single thing that started it

Civil war in America was inevitable from the beginning. A country can not partake in slavery without an uproar. Tensions were high between the north and the south already because of their different ways of life. The north focused on mass production whereas the south’s biggest trade was agriculture. Slavery allowed the south to prosper, their whole economy was based off of it. Though change was inevitable two documents that sped up the war process were the Fugitive Slave Act and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.…

I had originally thought that the main cause of the Civil War was slavery; however, after my research I now believe the true cause of the Civil War is much more complex. I mostly agree with agree with Holt and his theory that the political crisis caused the Civil War. While reading Holt’s essay I became convinced that slavery alone couldn’t have caused the Civil War because the tension over slavery had existed for so long before the Civil War. It was the destruction of the previous two party system that left the South feeling politically stranded which lead to the Civil War. This viewpoint was supported by my research on Jefferson Davis for the meeting of the minds. Davis felt that the South was losing faith in the political system because…

Slavery is what I believe caused the Civil War for many reasons. One reason why I think slavery was a major issue in the 1860s is because it divided the country into half free, and half slave. " A house divided against itself cannot stand [Doc F]." This quote from Abraham Lincoln shows how other people thought about the country, and slavery. Another reason why slavery caused the Civil War is because if the north kept its freedom and the south kept its slaves then the country is going to fall apart, not from the outside but from the inside. " I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free [Doc F]." Another quote from Abraham Lincoln. There is no way that a country can stand half and half, it would be logical to think that someday one will take over the other. Since Abraham Lincoln was nominated to be President, South got unhappy, quick. South Carolina threatened to secede and many people led revolts against slavery. This is what sparked America to go to war.…

Civil War The reason of the Civil War starting is because when Abraham Lincoln became the president it cause about seven Southern countries to secede from the union and they formed a thing called “Confederate States”. So after that there was many other reasons of the why the Civil War happened but some of the reasons are the idea of slavery, tariffs, trading and states rights. So, one of the reason of the civil war is the Missouri Compromise and it was extending to the California border and they are dividing the factor between the North and the South. If asked, most people would blame as the cause of the civil war the issue of slavery. This is understandable; many people in the U.S. at the time were against slavery, going to far as to help runaway slaves escape to the free north. But, while slavery at face value was a major factor, international politics and economics played a major role. Several factors, including the election of Lincoln, the raid on Harper 's Ferry, the Dred Scott decision, and, most importantly, the fugitive slave law, contributed to the growing rift between the North and South and, eventually, the Civil War.…
